I was of the belief that the blue Arduino Due with arduino.cc is the official board. They seem to be "mostly" made in China anyhow. Wikipedia has an interesting read on the licensing etc.
It all comes down to cost. I have audited some Chinese factories that make some high quality boards and I have audited some factories that make what we demand these days - cheap crap. They are very capable of making goods to any price a westerner customer is willing to pay for. - Matti

very interesting , the green board with Arduino.org are the genuine item. When you enter arduino.org into a browser it refers to arduino.cc which is more confusing . The green board also has the Arduino logo on the power diodes which is not the case with the blue boards. I also use a genuine Arduino Mega board for another project and it is blue.
