Getting OT here Paul.
I did my first small commercial job in what seems like forever this morning.
An evap replacement on a near new Skope under bench cabinet.

What a POS!

I just walked out as the kitchen is getting busy, will return tomorrow, but it's taken me a couple of hours to get the old one out.
I did some Williams and Channon ones last year and they were a snap compared to this cheaply made piece of junk.
Even an older Korean made Skope Centaur was really well made.
Skope used to be really good, this is awful.

Give me racks and chillers any day!

I feel your pain,we come across this crap as well.Give me an OLD,made in Aus,Orford any day.
The worse thing we are finding is all the refrig evaporaters,tiny,huge,name brands are just absolute garbage,some only last a couple of yrs,welds let go,tubes split,corrosion,the list goes on.And we are supposed to be reducing the release of refrigerants.....

Even the ones with corrosion protection eventually go as well.

Wait until you do all the work,then the capillary blocks[
We actually usually Change the capillary in those little units if we do an evap or compresser,cos if they don’t block altogether,they can partially block.particularly R404 and 22.

Anyway,back to my part winding start Bitzer that has tripped the overload on one set of windings

It sounds like it is not big enough, or the new one is faulty. If it is slow to start it will be drawing a lot more current for an extended time and will most likely cause the new capacitor to fail.

I have had the drill press from new so the start cap is original. First tried a 12mf / 400V cap as this was all I could get at short notice. When that didn't work properly I ordered a 12/450v as per the original. This has not improved over the 400v cap.

The voltage rating of the capacitor does not really affect its rating. The Mfd size is where it gets its "oomf" from. The voltage just needs to be about 1.5 x the line voltage.
Can you check the supply voltage while it is trying to start? A large line voltage drop will affect the starting. Lights going dim is a good indicator. Has anything else changed that could be causing a line voltage drop? Can you check that both the spindle and any intermediate shaft is free to turn with the belt(s) off? Bearings on the way out, or something caught up making it hard to turn?

This one is an ext. equalised TX but one of the young blokes in Canberra tipped me off to the capillary change as he'd experienced the same so it became a standard procedure while I was there.

Getting waaay OT now, but that place is bleeding staff like nobodies business which is a shame.
He's got the shots and gone to Schneider to work on BMS's and In-row coolers, one of the Chiller blokes went to JCI, I've gone to my little patch of paradise, my dual trade mate has gone tech teaching, my old apprrntice is serially thinking of pulling the pin....

How did you go with the Bitzer?
