I was chasing a book recently and it wasn't on Amazon Australia, but it was on Amazon USA, but you had to supply a US address.

The ATO can tax overseas companies.

Last few items I have bought online from abroad , I have had delivered to my parents house. Then they were re wrapped and posted to me as gifts. So far no tax sought. Let’s see if this will work again .

Only if they have a presence in Australia.

    Or engage in transfer pricing.
It can also be affected by what agreements Australia has with other countries.
For example, while working in Thailand I paid tax in Australia on income earned in Australia, but not on income earned in Thailand, because of an agreement.

Yes, and yes. Was still over $500 saving on what I was buying so although unwanted, it wasn’t a huge surprise and I was ready for it.

I have a parcel (non LR goods from the UK) that has been sitting in "International Receivals" in Perth for 6 days. I hope it is not being held by customs on a GST issue.....

If your buying as a BUSINESS you can claim the GST component back so you need an invoice with the GST component. Recently I purchased something and no invoice was provided with GST they took until I asked for it, otherwise I suspect they pocket the 10%

I got an email the same day the package landed in Aus with an Invoice for the amount payable and how to pay it. If the sender didn't include this info, they may have sent you a letter to the mailing address. Not sure if that's an issue but my email said that fees would apply if it was there for more than 72 hours and they would send it back to the supplier in a week.
