They are responding to EU rules that say have to be electric by 2040. U.K. this is 2030 and EU will probably move to this date as well.
Jaguar as a brand is finding it difficult to justify their existence. Market wants 4x4. Jaguar sales here are only taking sales from Land Rover. Velar should have had a Jaguar badge as it fits better with them than Land Rover. The lack of product differentiation must hurt them
What does a Jaguar 4x4 represent? An on road 4x4 like BMW or Porsche to me is the answer however not seen in marketing or branding. Cheap uninspiring interior of the Jaguar 4x4 could not have helped when you are the challenger
The move to be the electric brand is perhaps the last hope for Jaguar. They can justify the reduction in sales and save model development costs for replacement of the existing range which would otherwise be required
Renault is following a similar direction moving to electric accepting reduction in sales will win in longer term as they are seen as trusted with an electric vehicle
