Well who'd have thought Mercedes would be one of the first to announce they are abandoning ICE development.

Ah, so that's why Amazon bought into Rivian!

Does Rivian even have an assembly plant yet?

They bought a Mitsubishi plant in Normal Illinois but.

Rivian is headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan, not far from Detroit. The company plans to begin building both vehicles in late 2020 at a former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois.Dec 6, 2018
There is usually many a slip twixt cup and lip and the timeline envisaged to set up production and source components is just very difficult to believe seeing they don't intend to start producing utes until late 2020.

Maybe the recent crash of EV sales in China when the CCP reduced subsidies will enable them to get some batteries .

Looks like the 100 000 Amazon vans are interferring with ute & suv production, even though the article quoted earlier in this post said that it wouldn't?

That's very significant. Where MB goes others will follow. They have obviously decided the way to a viable future is to be innovators, not followers using the technology of others. A brave but smart decision.

Look at it this way - if you got an order that kick start your company in a huge way, would you put some other projects in the back burner? I would. And look at the bright side - this will cement their financials so when they start production for everyone else, then they’ll be in a solid position and any issues with the tech will be ironed out on the van project. I think it’s win, win - will just take a little longer to get to market but they won’t be short of funds when they do. 👍
