Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has lifted the hopes of a public holiday if the Matildas win the World Cup, saying the team has been 'inspiring the nation'.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Mr Albanese threw his support behind the idea but warned it was up to the state and territory leaders to decide.

'The whole of Australia will be watching the Matildas and cheering them on,' he said."

Reminds me of the time we were at an Adelaide Restaurant.

At a nearby table was sat a middle aged bloke bit looking a bit lost. Staff tried to communicate with him without much luck, so in the end they left him alone.


'er indoors wondered whether he was crew member from a visiting ship at Port Adelaide so looked at him & uttered just one word.......... SVENSKA?

Blimey, you should have seen the bloke come to life! He had found a new friend. As he unloaded all his vocabulary to us 'er indoors was quite startled so I said , "So what are you planning on doing for an encore now?" as the one Swedish word she knew then she had used up.[bigrolf]


.. I don't recall what happened next as somehow we asked him in very broken English to join us & he did.
In my working life I had reason to visit a Swedish Ship at Outer Harbour as the company I worked for were taking on the servicing of Clipon Refrigeration Container Units in Adelaide & in time were were invited by the Swedish Chief Engineer to visit socially when MV Woollahra (?) a Swedish Ship (now scrapped) was in Adelaide. She was Part Container Ship & Part General Cargo, out of Gothenburg.

Just recalled.
An odd thing happened when the Chief & the Ship's Electrician were inspecting the initial Unit on the wharfs' & after a few minutes I thought the "Sparkie's" face was familiar, so I mentioned this to him, him being an Australian. Bugger me dead!!!! He was good friend of my Uncle Bob & I had helped him with wiring when he wired Unc's new house years before. He gave up the Seagoing life & lived in Queensland later.

Later when Noel retired, I received an offer from the Shipping line to replace him which I had to decline as my then Boss thought I might get a taste for the Briny & never return.

My Trade Training hadn't covered Marine Electrical ( Did it ever?) so it was a mutual decision. I was told later that the young bloke who did, actually took on the job & at that time stayed with it.[bigsad]

Love it Des

I was drowning (NOT for the only time) deep down under water in Indonesia. A very kind person took pity and took my money and fed me the best meal I could of hoped for plus chatted in to me for the entire time I ate it!

Loved her very much. I did meet her kids, grand kids and a great grand child as well. Some of the crazy is the best bits of our lives mate.

Sorry for over sharing on non Disco Landrover bits. I found this very very funny

Yep & I find the "Coincidences"as we blunder though life, one of the most interesting aspects.
Indoors tells me I am not one of life's best observers but memories/recognition like these often crop up much to her surprise. One day it will be an olde flame & then there will be some hard questions & very quick explanations to think up on the run.

I trust you didn't come across a drowned Lockheed Hudson Bomber in your dives, S/N A16-67 Another Unc (RAAF WAG) & brother of Bob, shot down & reported as "on Fire" over the Celebes Sea a week after War was declared. Just asking hoping for another coincidence, as you do.[bighmmm]
No trace ever found. For years the family hoped beyond hope that he was still alive in the Jungle as they did back then. But at War's end it was confirmed that he must have been KIA.

In KL a few weeks ago with all my crew of 15 and 16 year old sailors. Several are the hard assed Diver types[bigwhistle]

Our diving yarns covered a LOT of war ships, planes and more at rest Des. I looked but did not touch myself. A bar in Malaysia somewhere has an array of bit which are seriously worth a look at.

I think I mentioned it before- The Navy Museum on Garden Island in Sydney has some of the most extraordinary bits I have ever seen. It is well worth a visit if you can get to it. Link for those interested History | Royal Australian Navy
