World War II aircraft that crashed in India found after 77 years

When I was in Port Moresby in 1971, scrub clearing and earthworks for a new fence round Murray barracks in the middle of the city resulted in the discovery of a WW2 crash site - complete with the remains of the pilot (I seem to remember it was a P-40).
"A US woman discovered she had won $3m (£2.2m) from the lottery after checking her spam folder for an unrelated email.
Laura Spears, 55, had purchased a Mega Millions ticket online from the state lottery after she saw the jackpot climbing into the hundreds of millions.
"A few days later, I was looking for a missing email from someone, so I checked the spam folder in my email account," she told lottery officials.
"That's when I saw an email from the lottery saying I had won a prize."
"I couldn't believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my lottery account to confirm the message in the email," she said, calling the win "shocking".
She now plans to retire early, and to monitor her emails more closely in the future.

While rocket casings etc have been deliberately crashed into the moon in the past, this one seems to be accidental. It is the second stage of the rocket that put a satellite a couple of million kilometres from earth, between here and the sun, to give early warning of "space weather" streams of particles from the sun, that pose a danger especially to humans in orbit.Quote:

The rocket was essentially abandoned after putting the satellite in position, and its position was unknown (and nobody was interested) for several years. Not too sure how it was identified when it was picked up heading for the moon - possibly by telescope and reading the writing!

I have just learned of the death last Sunday of William F Budd. One of the first glaciologists in Australia, he was heavily involved in Antarctic science from the 1960s.
Of particular importance his work in this period effectively founded the science of ice dynamics, and is a key foundation of all models of climate change, as it determines the effects of temperature changes on ice masses such as the ice caps on Antarctica and Greenland, as well as mountain glaciers.
In view of this, he has to be considered one of the most important scientists of the twentieth century, although little known outside of his special field.
