Rooftop or swag???

I slept on the ground in my swag seems like forever.

Last year I bought a Dune 4WD Stretcher Tent.....unzip it from its swag and 10-15 secs later you can sleep in it , you can spend another. couple of minutes setting up the tent part of it properly. That makes it virtually weatherproof.

My previous swag...the one I don't use now was also a Dune4wd swag. After hundreds...maybe thousands of nights sleeping in it , there's nothing really wrong with it, except the stretcher tent is better.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it due to its ease of setup and ease to carry and several of them are cheaper than any tent.

It probably really depends on how you want to camp.

Having used both extensively, next time around for either just myself or the "way off grid places" that the caravan won't get to, it would be a swag and stretcher. I still have my swag and stretcher, but sold the RTT.

I'm getting on now health wise, so a RTT is in actual fact quite awkward/difficult to erect, although they are much more comfortable/weather proof and private in most cases. Packing up every time you have to move can be a pain too, especially if your on a time factor when travelling with others.

With a swag, you dont even need an awning, just a cheap Bunnings tarp tied between trees or off the side of your car will work well to keep the rain, frost (read ice) or dew off,, I did this for years. The only time I had an awning on the car was when we bought the RTT, as it came with it.

Add a stretcher to your swag and you should be extra comfortable. Worked for us across the Simpson and other places.

My four swags might affect wind flow a little. Swags win for my crew. X2 for Add a big stretcher camp bed under one if you challenged on the deck.

OP hasn’t indicate number of campers or budget.

We’ve found there is no one solution that’s covers all needs 100%.

We have the following

- Poptop
- RV4
- Centre pole touring tent
- double swag and a number of single swags.
- 2P and 3P light weight 3 season tents

- recently sold the RTT and Camper Trailer, the RTT used to be swapped from trailer to car as required.

That's it, need to keep options open.
I like the idea of an RTT but I would want to remove it when not being used which would be a pita.
