    My pet peeves atm

'Licence plate' instead of 'registration plate' for the good old rego plate on your car.

And another is 'Auto (maker, manufacturer, etc) instead of 'car'

Byron Shire even has 'Enter license plate number.....' on their parking signs for their pay parking. Grrr.
And I keep reading it Australian newspapers.

I'm all for a living language,, constantly changing, but some US 'isms really grate.

[Edit] or number plate, which it's been since long before I was in nappies

my pet peeve is cricket commentators calling the new ball , the second new ball....like parrots.

Bill Lawrie started it and Richie Benaud tried to politely correct him and Bill would not be moved.

at start of play , it's just the ball or opening ball.

at 80 overs and every ensuing 80 overs a new ball may be brought into play.

so at 80 overs its the new ball

at a further 80 overs ( or160 overs ) the second new ball may be called for

if the innings goes for 240 overs do they still call it the second new ball?.......or the third?

Richie also said when commentating if you don't have anything significant to say about the current state of play shut up.

these current commentators will not let ten seconds of silence permeate the airwaves without their knowledge being expounded upon you.

    that is all....out.

I dislike the use of baseball terminology by the commentators, with M. Waugh and Gilly being the main offenders. I mean, baseball was invented in the 19th century and cricket in the 16th so surely cricket takes precedence. Also, I still don't understand how, when a bowler delivers a slower ball, it's called a 'Change up'!

Hood, Trunk and Windshield also are in use. I was a little saddened to find out, whilst discussing the ' Native Title Hand Over' of Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) with an indigenous friend, that the term 'First Nation' is coming into play. How American is that and how disappointing, in my opinion. My mate wasn't too fussed on it either but, his thoughts are generally, not in agreement with the present 'Elders' supposedly running things.

Yep, I've heard windshield a few times, too. Grumpy old buggers thread

And 'gas' and 'gas station' for petrol and service station.

I suppose it's no different to what was the 'wireless' according to mum and grandparents when I was little yet was already in transition to the ubiquitous radio.

At least we still all say 'aluminium' Grumpy old buggers thread
