And no gutters for any debris to build up in.

No matter how far away the area is cleared around the residence, combustible material still seems to get into gutters.

A bit of a tricky one imho although I applaud it..

Volunteers often say they volunteer because that is what they wish to do to give something back to the community but as Doe said" a slippery slope". Wait until the first Court case & W 'elf & safety, insurance, liabilities, responsibilities & whatever else raises its ugly head. It will have to be very professionally organised so that existing Professional firefighters can't be doing fire duties on days off for extra cash etc & it may not be as simple as it first looks.

    Time will tell.

I notice in Bunnings yesterday that some gutter guard is fire rated and some isn't.
I would like to screen the outside of all our verandahs with fire resistant mesh, but it would be costly.
I saw a house on TV which had mesh screens on rollers which could be rolled across to cover outside areas, but rolled back when not needed.

Weather generated by the fire. Ten kilometre high cloud column with lightening, I think they said. Really scary.

Now two more dead and five missing.

I see a Seaborne evacuation is being planned to get the 4,000 off ah la Dunkirk stylee..

I guess the new Amphibious ships have to find a good use somewhere & if they can't be used for this they'd be a waste of Taxpayer's money.

    It'll be excellent practice.

Looks like the lads have got the upper hand.

    INCIDENT UPDATE

    Time Message Issued: 17:56
    Date Message Issued: 31/12/2019
    Origin / Name: CUDLEE CREEK
    Incident Update - CUDLEE CREEK

    ISSUED FOR CUDLEE CREEK
A Reduced Threat has been issued for the Cudlee Creek fire which is now Contained.

If you see an unattended fire call triple zero (000). Residents inside the fire ground need to be alert for hotspots and re-ignitions. Be aware that there will be numerous roots and stumps smoldering which may still cause fire outbreaks for many days or even weeks to come.

As conditions have abated it is appropriate to reflect on the outcome from earlier this week.

Over the coming days and weeks volunteers and staff will continue to work on this fire by patrolling, checking, planning and extinguishing, up until the fire is able to be declared complete. A huge thank you to everyone as their efforts continue.

The community response to this fire has been exceptional. The CFS would like to thank everyone in the community for their attention to the warning messages and to the challenging circumstances. Also a big thanks for the support they provided to all the services involved during this extended event.

Firefighters, volunteers, staff, support personnel and allied agencies, along with hundreds of families at home, have been amazing in keeping the impact of the challenging conditions to a minimum. Monday's excellent outcome has been the result of exemplary dedication, planning and hard work over the previous ten days by a huge number of people. Thanks to all of you.

For assistance with injured or distressed animals, native or domestic, South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management (SAVEM) can be contacted on Ph: 0477 055 233 or email:coordinator@savem.org.au

Road access is being continually reviewed and roads may close at short notice. There is still the threat of falling branches and whole trees and stock wandering on the road. A large amount of road signage has been damaged adding an extra risk to road travel. Refer to Traffic SA - Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure for the latest information.

This message will be updated as the situation changes or before: 01/01/2020 19:00
    WHAT TO DO:

    • Check and follow your Bushfire Survival Plan
    • Decide what you will do if the situation changes
    • Look and listen for information on television, radio, internet, mobile phones and by speaking with neighbours

    KEEP UP TO DATE:

Do not rely on a single source for warning information.

For emergencies call Triple Zero (000)

Fire out of control in the Adelaide hills

We’re closely monitoring one at Miltalie.
Within 5km of my site and flaring up again at the moment.

I’ve spent the day working with the rest of the Critical Response Team to implement asset protection for our facilities and confirmed evacuation plans for our forthcoming 45c & High wind day.

This was 15 min after the lightning strike yesterday. It was 34km away.

Yes, I've thought of that too - but it would be very expensive.

    Hi all

I haven't decided yet if volunteers getting paid is a good idea or not. I was in the VRA for a few decades. Paying volunteers is as people have already mentioned "a slippery slope", is fraught with potential legal difficulties, can end up being arbitrarily divisive (sorry you only worked 9 days not 10), do you compensate the support workers who take time off work to make sandwiches and cook for a week to support the fire fighters? And of course once you pay people then you will get those that sign up that should stay at home - that's the nicest way to say that :-)

And do we extend this to the VRA, Lifesavers, Salvos, CWA, and all the other volunteer organisations that help our communities? The SES already get paid.

Oh, and the Govt will probably implement the payment legislation badly. So I am not convinced this will be a good idea.

As an ex-volunteer (VRA not fire) I'm tending to prefer that rural fire brigades stay with non-paid volunteers but get far better funding for equipment, training and support. With a few new Land Rover Defenders for each brigade they might get more volunteers :-)

PS. Last week was 30 years ago that I was called out to assist with the Newcastle earthquake, 28 December 1989. My wife was in WICEN at the time and she was called up also to provide comms.

    Mike
