If the main fire had passed I would not know though if the tires wire on fire or something under the bonnet like a diesel fuel line or if the car was about to burst into flame. I suppose its a bit risky to pop your head up out from under that blanket too early.
(Like at night dangling your feet over the bed when your a kid, there are things under the bed.)

no, dont soak the blanket as this can lead to steam burns.

knowing when to exit is hard. yesterday evening on KI we had a whole division trapped. not a truck, not a strike team, not a sector, a whole division.

ive just realised you meant something different...

after the flame front has passed, get out and check under your car. hopefully you chose a good spot to park. bare earth, a road, already burnt ground.

I wouldn't over think it too much Mike. Some basic preparations and common sense will get you 90% of the way there. Don't forget the south coast burnover video looks to be a fairly high fuel load area. Avoiding that would be a high priority. Best scenario would be to be in a grass paddock that you knew was flat in front of you, then line yourself up and drive through the moving front to burnt paddock on the other side. Best is through the fire flank rather than the head.

The parents property burnt through on 22 Dec. 5 fire fronts over 9 hours attacking the house, but they saved it with good preparation. They have a 400,000Ha fire break now.
    Stay safe.
    Chris.

The Cyclone building up on the NW coast should bring a nice cool change and hopefully some rain to the fire affected areas in the East and that may hopefully help contain or even put out these fires

Thanks for that advice. I had presumed that a wet blanket would be better. Wife also thinks to keep it dry as it's better insulating. Glad I asked here.

Bloody hell, cj. the fire was really out to get them! Glad they got through that ok. Maybe a Ticket in Tatts might be a goer?

Re your 400.000Ha firebreak comment. Read something & posted it on here a couple of weeks ago, but imho it is worth repeating just in case.

Apparently burnt ground can still burn again as it is the carbon that reignites & supports another fire. I don't know if this is based on fact & it would be good to prove/disprove.
That was one family's experience but please don't take my word for it, but it sounds like there ain't much to burn around them now after five fronts tried to take them out.

But one can never tell! I suppose the reignition needs to be "supported" by a strong wind & maybe fireballs. I don't think that family even knew, as they were just glad it moved on.

    My best wishes for them.

the sensationalism in the news, even the abc

sensationalism on social media. some people have had sudden and forcible opening of their eyes. and now they want the world changed to suit their convenience.

    Who lives in Eltham

Heres an eye opening report that was commissioned after Black Saturday, no action was taken on , Wonder if someone from Nillumbik Shire will pull it out of the archives after current events.

I'd say this applies pretty much to any (hinterland) Suburbia along the great Dividing Range

Ok, time out everyone. This thread has got way too Political. Will be sifting through it now and weeding out all the Political content - if you have a post that disappears, that will be why.

No more please, leave all that in CA.

Actually Gav, I think all of us displayed a pretty good attitude, very "restrained" in this particular thread at least, and I had no problems with any of the comments, whether they agreed with me, my political persuasions, or not.
However, you guys put in the time, and you guys make the rules, I totally understand that, and I understand that this forum is NOT about Politics.
    So thank you, Pickles.
