Yes - although not just an Americanism, I think that grated potato soaked in fat and cooked in fat so as to make it as unhealthy as possible really is an American invention. Not quite the same as potato cakes, which are mashed potato fried.

*sigh* another thread shamelessly taken OT...

RRTurboD seemed like a good name to use, given that I did not need to explain what I was driving. RR started as TurboD, 5 Speed, but now has Tdi300 and ZF Auto ... and has been reliable!

Compared with what has preceded this, mine is dead boring.

I had stumbled on the site, was browsing as a guest, saw that there were advantages in registering, was keen to search the forum for a particular piece of information so needed to register quickly, needed something I could remember, assumed all the interesting nicknames would already be taken, couldn't be bothered trying a few to try to find one that was still available, so just used my number plate.

Christian name and 1st initial of surname, the 8353 was suggested by some distant automated web site registration software when I was trying to be too imaginative, in the end I gave up and accepted it. Although I would'nt have thought there were 8,352 other simonl's in front, so go figure why it picked that number! Maybe its Cybernet trying to communicate with me and I'm the keeper of the answer to life the universe and everything.

Any way it kinda stuck so I used it here
