Herd immunity is irrelevant with this virus and our current vaccinations - the reason being is that current vaccines do not prevent a vaccinated person from getting the virus and passing it on - so herd immunity can never be achieved. The vaccines just stop a person from getting ill or minimizes symptoms but does prevent passing it on - so with current vaccines, even with 100% of the population vaccinated, the virus can happily circulate in the community with few people getting very sick. Current vaccinations do not IMMUNIZE they only vaccinate.

Once vaccinations immunize, that is make the population immune from COVID then yes herd immunity is relevant.

It seems the vaccines do reduce the rate of transmission:

RACGP - Mounting evidence suggests COVID vaccines do reduce transmission.

I suppose the other point is we're not vaccinating children, so that's a quarter of the population unprotected, and children can certainly catch it.

One case I know of the 5yo brought it home from kindergarten, 30yo father was infected and is still not right. That was during the first wave in Vic.
