This is certainly going to be the worst recession both in this country and worldwide since 1929, and quite possibly worse than that. And if we try too hard to minimise the economic impact, the added monetary and social impact due to the extra deaths is very likely to result in a greater economic impact than a stricter shutdown would have. Just what is the optimum level of shutdown to get the best result is impossible to determine with any certainty.

And when things return to normal - but they won't. The world is not going to be the same again, at least, not for a very long time. First of all there will be the economic costs weighing on the economy, but probably more importantly, we will know that pandemics and economic collapse can really happen to us. This is likely to lead to a lot more work being done to prepare for the next one, both by individuals and all the way up to governments and beyond that to international bodies. People will spend less, and save more, which is not going to help a quick recovery. My parents carried the habits of life in the Great Depression through the remaining fifty years of their lives.

Just to talk about something other than toilet paper.

My thought is I wonder how many have always been in the cash economy and do not have a tax file number.

From now on the tax department will be able to do data matching and find lots of people that do not officially exist.

Capsicums here (Western end) are now around $14 per kg, were $7 to $9. - They look terrible, and the story was "They're from SA, where the market gardners have been hit by hot weather" . Yeah, Riiiiight. Similar with cauli and other greenery...

My school bus run is normally 23 to 27, was down to FOUR this morning, (57 seat bus) being the first day of 'allowed to stay away from school' .
- Plenty of space to practice Commuter Distancing, one in each corner.

Staff told me they expected 150 kids, 10% of the 1,500 roll. They've got on-line lessons up and running, and are thinking of having a couple of 'At School' days for the kids, to alleviate Cabin fever. [bigsmile1][wink11][happycry]

FIFO son arrived last night, squished together in a 320 'bus... normally tranported to/from work-site, sardined in a Volvo 'bus.
They reckon the mines need to take "Distancing" more seriously, more buses to space the workers further apart. Makes sense to me, as they're keeping themselves apart while at work. Son is fortunate in that no-one on his swing goes 'home' to Bali...

I personally believe we are heading to the full lockdown stage (just read india is going to do it). But Im having a hard time in understanding the governments choice to shut down so many buisiness's that are "high risk" social interactions yet they continue to leave the schools open. If it was me I'd say leave them open for students of working parents, however for those who are able to stay home it should be encouraged and systems in place to enable students to carry on their school work from home - perfectly doable with current video conferencing technology and work can be emailed either direction.
