Exerpt concerning the International Maritime Organisation. I suppose the difficult thing here is to decide as to whether the ships are 'in distress'?
To make things easier for all mariners, IMO came up with idea of places of refuge. According to IMO, ship place of refuge is a place where a vessel in distress can be safely taken to, in order to prevent further damage or deterioration of the ship. The guidelines of IMO state two situations for use of places of refuge:
- In case the safety of life on distressed ship is not in jeopardy but the vessel has been damaged and cannot be left in its current location without causing further damage
- The safety of life of those on the distressed vessel is in jeopardy
It should be noted that in either case, the places of refuge are not necessarily ports where a ship can seek refuge. Any place where a vessel in distress can be safely moved to without causing further damage to the vessel or immediate environment.
The other issue is that apparently a lot of their home ports are closed, so they can't land there either. It brings to mind the Dunera and perhaps the St. Louis.
The humane thing to do would be to take the crew to a quarantine station, treat the unwell and repatriate the others.
Which, by the way, is what Australia is asking other countries to do for Australians trapped off their shores, like in Chile.
Oh dear. Jankers for me tomorrow or even the Brig..[bigrolf]
I am in the same boat - planned ahead, paying my way and no drain on the public system - even pay tax. Now I dont really want a handout but it sticks in my graw that I did the right thing and get no recognition - maybe I should have just ****ed it against the wall and had a good time and claim on the welfare system.
It applied everywhere, in the Canberra fires those that had their houses insured got nothing but those who didn't got huge handouts - same as now.
Self funded retirees have done the right thing bit it is those how couldn't care less that get the rewards.

Invariably you & I seem to be at "loggerheads".
However, although it pains me to say it, and, the same as you, experience it, it appears that you & I are in exactly the same boat.
IMHO, there should be some sort of "support" for us too. Have you any ideas?
Pickles.
The simple reason the ships are not leaving is not that they will prevented from berthing back home but is that they all have coronovirus on board and have access to medical assistance here is needed. If they leave the trip will take 2 to 4 weeks and if someone comes down very sick on the way there will be no medical assistance - hence they stay here and if cases get so bad to need hospitalisation then that is available.
The other aspect is that there are still many ships overseas with hundreds to thousands of Aussies onboard that are unable to dock, if we start forcing issues here there is likely to be payback against those people.
Better to leave them out at sea out of harm's way and sit it out.

this week has been an eye opener for me
first time i have seen a family of six, 2 adults and 4 kids on the bribie road pushing supermarket trolleys filled with what appeared to be their personal belongings. they had obviously just been kicked out of somewhere. i heard a local church got them sorted after spotting them shortly after i did.
i had a couple of jobs in real estate offices over the last couple of days. their phones just rang constantly with people ringing in to say they had lost jobs and will pay whatever they can afford to pay. both offices have signs up saying no entry please ring us and their doors were locked.
that took me back a bit... be a hard position to be in having to deal with those sorts of phone calls
i had an elderly customer pull up in my driveway last night begging me to sort her phone as that is all she had to connect with her kids but she wasn't game to get out of the vehicle so i passed her some disinfectant wipes through the window so she could wipe the phone when i gave it back to her after fixing it and before she gave it to me :p
shouted her a cup of tea to try and calm her down while i sorted the phone out. she left happy thankfully.
for the first time i knocked back a job because the customer wouldn't tell me if they had been in a position to get infected. they rang back a couple of hours later asking if i could do the job remotely as they couldn't get anyone else to do it either ... i got them sorted remotely
i am still busy but i really need to be thinking about isolating as i am a prime candidate as well they tell me.
is going to be very hard to do....
they should have given a basic wage to everyone with a tax file number
if people already had surplus dosh the tax man would get it back in the end at tax time
there are way too many falling through the gaps the way it is at present
i cannot for the life of me see why they scattered it hodge podge the way they have
smarter minds than mine, obviously
