And "they" know this how ? Testing ?- for a novel virus ??? something never seen before - how do you recognize something / someone you've NOT previously seen??? Especially as overt symptoms are so similar to flu strains, for the 80 or so % who are not seriously affected / needing hospitalization.

Not surprising, given the US's track record in bio-warfare interest...and that some species of bats can be unaffected while carrying all kinds of deadly diseases... they have a Very Interesting immune system !

Here's one of the better balanced presentations of what is gaining more and more traction. And perhaps if the Truth is ever uncovered... it could be.... human stupiditiy and/or incompetence... (The US also had an "escape" from one of their facilities, Fort Dix, from memory ?...) which would go partly towards explaining the Beijing's vehement denials. - Orientals have a particular difficulty with "Loss of Face" with Dictatorships more prone, with the Chines Communist Party being the stand-out example of both.

The USA had the virus circulating widely well before Trump belatedly stopped flights. The New York virus came from Europe, particularly Milan, and spread around most of the USA, while the Washington strain came from China and is less widespread in the USA.

Remember, coronaviruses are not new - they are numerous and widespread. We have Hendra and Lyssavirus, but our bats don't have SARS 2, which is what causes Covid-19. I have been vaccinated against Lyssavirus, incidentally.
We have to get over this politically-ibspired obsession with blaming China for SARS 2, when they were merely the first to diagnose it, because China has high medical standards. We must recognise that the world has always been awash in deadly viruses, but most don't usually jump to humans (we hope Corona Virus).
Now that SARS 2 is infecting humans it will inevitably become endemic, so we will all get it eventually, and if they find a vaccine that will merely limit its severity and spread. So, that's something to look forward too. Corona Virus
Jeezuz What a bloody awful world we live in today!

Seems every bugger is at it to kill the world population one way or another if that is true. But why?

    Agreed.

A friend of mine is an ICU nurse. She was telling me that when people are admitted to the ICU it's sometimes not known why they're sick, they just treat them - people come in, either get better or don't, and no-one's the wiser as to why they were sick in the first place.

Also, the swine flu was circulating in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne long before the authorities became aware of it - the GPs were inundated with this aggressive flu but no-one connected the dots. It was only afterwards that they went back and confirmed it.

It is very contagious. We have an outbreak here that went from 30 cases to 1000 is a week. It is impossible for it to have been present without a massive impact on the death rate. There were no changes in the death rate trends until March this year. The data is all there and simple to look at.

The only places that did not have massive death rate spikes had locked down in advance. Places like Wuhan and New York were overwhelmed before they had time to react.

If it was in society last year with no controls in place that location would have had massive deaths overrunning the health care systems.

In Australia only 10% get seriously sick, only 5% need hospital and only 1% die so there could be lots of undiagnosed cases out there.
I read one estimate that when the first case was diagnosed in New York there could have already been 10,000 undiagnosed people infected in the city. Fast forward a week, with each positive person infecting 1-2 contacts a day, and that total could easily have been over a million, except we will never know because the USA didn't get serious about testing for another month, by which time it was too late to stop the pandemic from spreading nationwide.
We don't know how many people are infected unless there is a lot of testing. The more we test, the more are found.
We are usually walking around blissfully unaware in a swamp of viruses.

Speaking of Sock Drawers. While you were fiddling around( AKA ripping my sock drawer to bits caveman style) did you happen to notice a couple of, shall we say, "Sensitive Letters" taped to the underside of the drawer 007 style? If you haven't got them, then indoors must have eyeballed them. Bugger, just when things were going so swimmingly too.
