Yes it does, of peoples inability to understand that elimination in the wider world is impossible.
And it appears that those wanting a hard closure are all retired.

People still need to live, people need to earn a living, school leavers will need jobs. There's a bigger picture hard closure advocates are missing.

Yes, I agree somewhat. I am hearing two types of mentality coming through in discussions here too (in my own head also). A 'fortress' mentality of "lock it down and keep it locked" and a mentality hard to capture in a single word. It is an awareness of a concern about future, work, jobs, homes, life... as we knew it. This is largely also and tinged with an anxiety about navigating the 'new' normal and wanting a voice in the formation of that. Loosely, you could group these mentalities into two groups: old or young; healthy or unhealthy; established or establishing etc. The context is the driver for the opinion.

The lock down here was hard. The true cost is just starting to emerge and we will no doubt be discussing and analysing whether it was too hard, too light or just right for decades. We are in an election year and all political parties here will see the rebuilding or renewing of NZ a large part of their policy. It is going to be interesting.

If only the southern states came back to zero cases for 28 days, all would be good, and not quarantining some one with a connection to an outbreak is unacceptable. [ as in our latest case] And sorry, you are wrong when you say it is just retired people who want the border closed. People I speak to would rather open our borders to NZ, before the southern states. NSW are just not trusted after the Ruby Princess, rightly or wrongly, and Victorians just don't seem to get it. [ or they are, and that's the problem] Until the southern states can prove they have responsible COVID systems in place [ and zero cases would be a good start] it would be irresponsible for the Qld government to open up completely. The big picture is this is going to be with us for a long time, and with scientists finding out more about this virus almost every day, it seems, [ such as it is a blood disease at the COVID stage, herd immunity may be a fallacy, and now they think you can carry the virus with you dormant after having it, and get it again] , restrictions of some kind are going to be with us for a while yet. That's the real big picture. Sorry to sound alarmist, but that is the reality, unfortunately. The new reality we must all get used to.

I fully agree with this, Rick but, (there's always going to be a few 'Buts' in this topic) you're citing legitimate reasons. Is the wish of thousands of grey and not so grey tourist/caravanners to head to warmer climes due to the season, a legitimate reason for their crossing a border and increasing the risk of the virus transmitting to North Queensland communities, which have remained unaffected to date? Perhaps right up the East coast, when you think about it?

The virus will never be gone completely, its something we will have to put up with for years.

The borders can't be shut for years, business needs to get moving.

This is more than likely an isolated case.

The real issue will be how and when to open the country to international travellers.

Some countries are already requesting that travellers have a COVID test before leaving their country of origin.Although as we know the tests are not that accurate.Maybe using sniffer dogs as well is the go,but how good they will be,who knows.

The COVID19 host genetics initiative. If there is any reason for optimism it is that this virus will probably be the most dissected and investigated ever. And it is a collaborative world effort.

How severe are COVID outbreaks across the US ? Look up any Metro area. Once again part of the real big picture.

Business and commerce haven't been affected by the border closures only the tourists and the various leeches that feed off them have been affected by this.
