I recall the nation - wide moan when it was 'discovered' Sid....ome was having tools made in the Orient. One big distributor in Perth had a large box under their front counter, for returned defective & broken tools. It was emptied once a week.
From memory, that cute range of miniature stainless steel pliers / nippers / cutters with red plastic handles was the first wave, and stayed particularly over-represented.

Sad thing is, over the decades I've had "No Brands" of similar s/steel, Sid...me knock-off oriental cutters/pliers/nippers... and never yet broken or damaged any of them.

Today my choice of good spanner is either Starwhille or Facom. Both European.


PS, put new batteries in a torch this morning, VARTA from Bunnings, you know, their cheap line. A few % more than the ALDI I occasionally use, but seem to last longer.

Varta is made in GERMANY, the other in China. IF Germany, with it's higher wages can economically make alkaline batteries, - why can't we ?

Varta is a big company. Our Defender had a Varta as it's original battery.

My first experience was with Varta batteries in these

The batteries used to leak and corrode the circuit boards, they were there to hold up the massive 64K of memory so you didn't need to retype your form letters.

Anyway, back on topic.

Two new covid cases in NZ today that are recently arrived travelers from the UK. Infection diagnosed in quarantine I understand. More details today at 3pm. We had gone 25 days without a case and longer than that in terms of community transmission cases. So long as we can keep the lid on the imported cases, we're going to be OK.

I suspect that this situation will be the long term norm until a vaccine is developed or the virus burns itself out. Some stories in the press today about the virus becoming less agressive in Italy due to it "burning out"

It just proves that closing the borders does work. So a few businesses go out of business, it is still a small price to pay to protect a Country & it's population.

The interesting bit of that is so much clearly wrong information was around in Jan and Feb on that topic. I like WHO but this is a butt kicker ".....global health officials have advised against such measures. "Travel restrictions can cause more harm than good by hindering info-sharing, medical supply chains and harming economies," the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday."

I think it is " Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus" Suspect he should be looking for a quieter role

it's interesting that SA hasn't copped the **** that QLd has for keeping it's borders closed.
