Speculation has also ebbed and flowed as to 'how come?' the virus spread so fast and so w i d e in such a shrt time...
With jobs in the balance, plus national debt, now would be a good time to re-visit the old fashioned idea of making / manufacturing more products IN Australia. - Remember when we not only built our own washing machines and fridges, but electrical cable, electronic components, and even nuts and bolts ? Even dunnies Remeber those? - the ones with a better surface....
And the most sought-after Tool-making Steel in the world was made in..... South Australia.

Given that a Lancet article on February the 4th from epidemiologists based in Hong Kong estimated that there were actually 75,815 cases in Wuhan on 25 January, the figures in the article are not unreasonable:
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/l...260-9/fulltext
"In our baseline scenario, we estimated that the basic reproductive number for 2019-nCoV was 2·68 (95% CrI 2·47–2·86) and that 75 815 individuals (95% CrI 37 304–130 330) have been infected in Wuhan as of Jan 25, 2020. The epidemic doubling time was 6·4 days (95% CrI 5·8–7·1). We estimated that in the baseline scenario, Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen had imported 461 (95% CrI 227–805), 113 (57–193), 98 (49–168), 111 (56–191), and 80 (40–139) infections from Wuhan, respectively. If the transmissibility of 2019-nCoV were similar everywhere domestically and over time, we inferred that epidemics are already growing exponentially in multiple major cities of China with a lag time behind the Wuhan outbreak of about 1–2 weeks."
Chongquing has a population of 30.48 million, Beijing is 21.54 million, Shanghai is 24.38 million, Guangzhou is 14.9 million and Shenzhen is 12.9 million - but those are just the official figures and don't take into account the unofficial populations or that a lot of those cities are parts of larger conurbations. So, lots of space for a virus to spread.
And then there was this prediction in the Lancet article:
"As such, given the substantial volume of case importation from Wuhan (figure 3), local epidemics are probably already growing exponentially in multiple major Chinese cities. Given that Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen together accounted for more than 50% of all outbound international air travel in mainland China, other countries would likely be at risk of experiencing 2019-nCoV epidemics during the first half of 2020."
So, yes, there wasn't much point asking people if they'd been to Wuhan .....

That they may be Rick, but they can still carry the virus back & so away we go again & again ad nauseum & in 20 or 30 years time some bright spark will suggest that they have a clean bill of health, carried out to Australian Standards in an authorised location BEFORE being set free in Oz.
"Oh dear Bellamy we should have done this in 2020 what a great idea."
If they are as you describe them shirley it would be in their interests as well. Not unless they are selfish inconsiderate bastards of the "Me First Brigade".
I seem to remember an island in Sydney - perhaps worth bringing it back online

Adelaide had Torrens Island which I recall was used when passengers arriving on the Mooltan had some disease, Smallpox, it was.
Was a bit spartan but quite comfy & obviously of a lower standard than the 5 star gaffs that seem to be used today. When the road & bridge was built for the Power Station it wasn't isolated any more, so the whole joint has been opened up for Tourism in conjunction with the SA Maritime Museum who occasionally do tours, a bit like North Head. I was taken there yonks ago when my MiL (remember those?) imported a dog from the UK. Was picked up from the Birkenhead Bridge & a launch took us down the Port River to the Animal Quarantine station at the same facility. A pleasant days outing actually.
Sydney had North Head as a Quarantine Station or are you thinking of Pinchgut just off the Opera House/Garden Island a tad.? Was an early harbour Fort.
