according to what i have read...

spanish flu is nothing like covid apart from killing many humans

spanish flu immunity, once acquired, lasted a long time

covid19 immunity lasts 6 months or so they are saying, so it near impossible to build effective herd immunity

I reckon you are spot on. It seems to correlate quite well with how dense the population is

How good is Tasmania! - 62 days without a single case and not planning to open its borders any time soon. That's elimination.

NZ now at 71 days and resuming full activity, still with borders closed.

Even Qld hasn't had a locally generated case since May.

BTW the 'economy' is not a 'thing' - it's just a way of measuring activity.

Without people, the economy doesn't exist. Unemployment is the key measure and our real rate including JobKeeper is now about 20%, concentrated in the states which kept their borders open.

Failing to eliminate the virus will cause repeated lockdowns and more unemployment than going hard early, I reckon.

Unprecedented in modern times, not unprecedented at all - and the figures show those that controlled outbreaks the best had the best economic outcomes.

The US is going to be a basket case after this (more than they are at the moment) - bloody glad we aren’t following suit.

Will we be hurting after this is all done? - Yes, would we hurt worse if we let this run its course - yes again.

You know, you've said that before and it's getting old.

You are on the other side of the continent - how the **** would you know what's going on here?

    Why continually kicking Victorians?

A lot of the cases we have here originated from interstate residents who returned to Australia through Melbourne - as I said before, if you think that Geraldton is handling things so much better why don't we divert all international flights there?

The studies from the 1918 pandemic show that economies that locked down did better in both the short term and long term.

Edit: Oh, and Sweden - they've managed to achieve a death rate 100 times higher than Australia's, or their neighbours', and still took the same-sized hit to their economy as their neighbours.

Edit: And there's a suspicion that the reason Sweden have done so poorly is that they withheld ICU admissions from anyone over the age of 70.
Then another elephant in the room. From another (Medical) blog I follow - which includes the odd Swede - the suggestion is made "migrants from the African continent" are approx 40% of the death numbers. Yet they constitute around 1% of population....
Why? - Sub-optimal immune system perhaps, due in no small part to chronic Vit. D deficiency, Dietary, low sun, (high latitude) on top of being Winter up there...

The UK govt and the press understands this is mainly responsible for the high % of "BAME" - Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic health workers catching COVID. 'Asian' in the UK r4efers to Indians/Pakistan, and Minority Ethnic a euphamism inclusive of middle Eastern Muslims....

Despite being in sunny WA, and never using sunscreen.... I need a daily dose of of 5,000 IU of D3 in order to maintain a barely adequate level. (Testing is recommended as individual reponse varies widely.) In light of yesterday's test results, I'm doubling D3 and upping K2.

We can only guess at the Vit D levels right up in the Nordic lands ! - and Melbourne enjoys a similar sheltering from the Sun...

Can"t comment on the allegation Sweden is 'thinning the herd', but I'll float it on that (other) blog. Regardless, it's becoming apparant that ICU ventilation can damage more... as it might save.

Yes it IS getting a bit "Old" But unfortunately it isn't getting any better in your neck of the woods is it??
I KNOW what is going on because I can read the newspapers watch TV and read the newsfeeds on the Net So YES I do know what is happening the other side of this continent.
We have already had cases of COV19 in Geraldton and many other parts of WA in the early days of this pandemic But unlike places like Melbourne we have contained the outbreaks and there has been NO community infections for quite a while now.
I am NOT "Kicking" Victorians at all, What I am saying is that EVERY Victorian needs to take this virus seriously and stop ****ing around Because obviously something is seriously wrong/broken with VIC's management of this pandemic.
Also Why in Gods name would you want to impose a mob of international flights on a small community ( about 40,000) like Geraldton that hasn't got anywhere near enough resources to take these people into quarantine and that our airport couldn't even be able to land the larger planes on anyway??

FFS Mate stop whining and face the fact that EVERY other State and Territory in Australia Has and still are (barring Melbourne) taking international/interstate flights and Yet VIC is the ONLY State having Major dramas with containing this virus So the criticism over Victoria's handling of this problem IS valid.
What do you mob expect, A Pat on the back for having done the job so well???
