West Australians put up with this for several long weeks along with isolating at home and a strict social distancing regime So it is understandable that WA is reluctant to open up its borders to reinfect the State after all this hardship and personal effort had to be endured while there is still a REAL chance of the infection spreading from the areas in the Eastern States that unfortunately haven't been able to control this outbreak yet.
91% of Western Australians want the border to remain closed until it is safe to reopen them because it IS keeping them safe from infection So why on earth would they want to open up the border just because Morrison wants to flex his political muscles and to hell with the West Australians health.

I saw him say that, but I think he's wrong. If Sydney is still a hotspot then people won't be able to go to Syd and return home unless they then go into quarantine for 14 days, which they won't want to do.

The FG's proposed definition of a hotspot is an average of 10 cases a day over three days in metropolitan areas, and 3 in regional areas. So Syd is currently a hotspot under that, although regional areas are not.

So I think it's likely Qld when it reviews its hotspot declaration in late September might go back to the previous situation of having Syd declared a hotspot, but not regional NSW.

The Qld system of defining hotspots by postcodes seems to be easy to administer and understand. Its easy to adjust the map of postcodes declared as hotspots as outbreaks occur. Qld wants to see 2 x 14 day infection periods clear of new cases before lifting a hotspot declaration. That's easy to understand.

Sydney needs tougher restrictions to suppress its current outbreak. For example, masks should be compulsory, not optional, on public transport, in shopping centres and in other confined spaces. Businesses should be required to have covid safe plans to operate.

If NSW took a harder line, instead of blaming other states, other states might be more confident about lowering border controls.

Politics aside, bureaucrats may have let it escape. They didn't go around infecting "average Melburnians", that was an own goal.

Much as I dislike the WA premier's attitude and political motivation for shutting the borders you do have a point. Most of the issues caused by border closures on the east coast are driven by the interlinked nature of the states such as border communities losing shops, medical services supplied across borders and workers who regularly travel across borders for business. Aside from transport and FI-FO WA doesn't have much of that and transport is exempt anyway.

The point is that it's not infecting average Melburnians - it's confined to specific regions, groups and occupations.

Exactly - it would have been utterly foolish to aim at "herd immunity" because we simply didn't know what the long term effects of this virus would be.

Not wishing to be a KillJoy & this thread is not helping, but I would hate to see this board come to blows because of it.

As Mods mentioned earlier, & which most of us had probably forgotten, it's time to put the mockers on the State & Blame agro crap. Personally, I want AULRO to be here in one piece when this **** is all done & dusted whenever that is. Some of us may not even be here when that happens unfortunately.

We cannot "cure" this thing & make the "right" decisions for Govts but we still need to be friends & it is what brought us together in the first place. Some of the opinions being made here conflict with others opinions & points of view & that is fine, but at times it gets out of hand.

I am concerned as the next bloke about the future in Australia & my personal worries about families.
