Because it is tradition to speak of fish in pounds. Sometimes it is nice to keep traditions going...and it makes them sound bigger. If you are struggling with the conversion, a 500gm block of butter you buy at the supermarket, is about 1 pound.
Not sure about over there, but here, especially in the area I am in, the trout fishery is a magnet for worldwide tourism(pre covid) and a huge recreational activity, for both us nationals and overseas people. It brings in a lot of tourist dollars, and it provides joy and recreation to a lot of people....not to mention a healthy food source. Our trout fishery seems to coexist quite successfully with native species.
Trout have coexisted for a long time here. The real problem for us, are catfish, who ruin the water quality of a pristine lake, and fish such as carp, which do truly decimate the native species.
We have year round seasons here, but some areas have limited seasons. That is to to with restocking and giving the trout a chance to breed and replenish etc. Fishery management.
Just like in NZ it's still quietly circulating..
