The spindles have a thread on them that the decorative cover screws down on. I had considered vice grips but I'd have needed to buy new spindles , which Ironically are now a hex nut and I'm sure that there are plenty of spanners that fit.
This little sucker did the job though with a shifter on the outside.

Had some chilli paste left over so decided to do some spicy, beef jerky. Normally I use 'roo meat but the beef was oh, so much cheaper.

Yep, those Hydro seals seem to be the dog's danglies. A good crowd to deal with as well if you have a problem with their products..
Speaking of replacing washers I have found that "vertically fitted" Tap handle washers (Shower, Laundry) seem to last for years whereas the Horizontal bits over sinks wear out much earlier & have pondered why.
Less use & less effort is placed on them than the Horizontal ones??
The don't catch any crap behind the seals?
That spanner is a true Aussie way to overcome a problem,Make the bugger.
Sinks are the most used taps in a house usually.
Particularly the kitchen, but ours has had flickmix for the last 20 yrs that has been fine.
As you may be aware you can also fit Threaded Tap Seats Kits for those bastard taps that you can never stop dripping. Simply dress the seat as normal, then screw in a supplied Thread tap until it bottoms, remove & flush tap body before reassembly to get the crap out. Screw in SS seat. A great idea & easy to do.
Beef cheaper???
Did you get up early and look on the road side for a fresh road kill??
Worst case, as a friend used to do when he was struggling on an apprentice wage, visit the freezer isle in the supermarket that has the frozen dog meat. Makes a good stew, so with plenty of chilli and spices I’m sure it would make good jerky
Make sure you get the one that says “kangaroo” , if it only says “pet meat” good chances it’s horse meat![]()
