Good advice. I would have thought you would have been aware of this as it was one of the first things they reported.

I thought my family was doing the right thing with disinfectants to kill Corona Virus but not so. We've been using the wrong type - benzalkonium chloride. Apparently there are two types - one is excellent the other better than nothing. See below.

There are two main types of hand sanitisers: alcohol-based and alcohol-free. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers contain varying amounts and types of alcohol, often between 60% and 95% and usually isopropyl alcohol, ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or n-propanol. Alcohol is known to be able to kill most germs.
Alcohol-free hand sanitisers contain something called quarternary ammonium compounds (usually benzalkonium chloride) instead of alcohol. These can reduce microbes but are less effective than alcohol.
Not only are alcohol-based hand sanitisers found to be effective at killing many types of bacteria, including MRSA and E coli, they’re also effective against many viruses, including the influenza A virus, rhinovirus, hepatitis A virus, HIV, and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Yep, the soap and water is the best and then if you cant get to a sink (eg, out an about, in the car etc) then use alcohol based sanitizers.
While the shops are charging $20 for a pump if you can even get it, you can make it really easily at home.
I've attached the World Health Organisations hand sanitizer forumla as recommended to me by the pharmacist.
I made a batch at it cost about $80 for 14.25 litres. It is watery though which is like sanitizers used in hospitals but unlike the stuff you buy in supermarkets.
12 litres of 95% metho spirits (Diggers brand from the supermarket, Bunnings, the paint shop etc - its Ethanol)
600ml Hydrogen peroxide 3% (Chemist)
200ml Glycerol (Chemist)
1.45 litres of sterile water (boiled and cooled)
Cheers

I had no idea Tombie - not a big TV watcher and don't buy newspapers. Have happily been using the wrong disinfectant on car door handles etc, food packaging etc and some of our hand sanitizers are also the wrong type..
Try buying any sought of alcohol to make it at the moment - nil stock - good luck - I have tried and not found any stocks as the zombies have been there before me. We made our own using the last 200ml of isopropyl alcohol we had in the medicine chest and some aloe vera. Works well but will run out soon - we use it in the car and when we are out and use anti-bacterial soap handwash at home.

I’m pretty anti-social outside of work normally, so this is hardly changing my exposure.
