Well, we did every engineering calculation on a slide rule , unless you were good with an abacus.

I spent several months in the engineering design/drawing office as an apprentice fitter/machinist and couldn't do the job then without a good slide rule , which was expensive , and a book of logarithm tables as well.

I don't think we were special, it was all we had. Like removing large nuts with a chisel , filing a surface flat using several grades of files and finishing with a scraper.

I loved every onset of technology.

Be careful! One of the best quality slide rules were made by Faber Castell in Germany. The body is made from Swiss Pearwood with celluloid facings.

To prevent distortion with temperature and humidity changes the cunning Germans actual made the body in 2 halves, joined together by concealed springs. I have two of them, both at least 60 years old, and both of them slide as smooth as the day that they were made. :thumbsup:

Later models, and some special ones, were made from "Geroplast", a type of plastic I believe.

I've got one in the depths of a trunk....yes one of those metal trunks.....out in the shed.

My father gave it to me after he thought he'd finished with it....he was electrical fitter.

not much good giving it to my sons they would probably use it for kindling.
