Just heard from where my car is, they are great there. Trans hose has come off/broken. So he's ordered what needs and service kit. I'm worried as to why it would blow a hose after being rebuilt only 16000km or so ago!

Mine managed that. There is a push on connector that in my case was disturbed, it blew off after around 2000km and left an embarrassing puddle on the road.

Reminds me, mine is now back driving so I'd better check that.

Didn't they merge with, or get taken over by Kirby?

I seem to recall summat about that Ian. It would have occurred around the year 2000 as I don't recall it by then but maybe, just maybe?


My esteemed colleagues would have more of a clue.

Glad I'm not only one!! Thry also found today that a plastic bit that's inside the transmission, I think sucks oil or air, cannot remember exactly what he said it was, but it's cracked. They are trying to source a new what ever it is. They really are good there!

James N Kirby used the Tecumseh designs under license when Kirby's still manufactured in Oz. (And initially when they began a joint operation with Kulthorn in Thailand)
Kulthorn Kirby still exists as a public company in Thailand and utilise their own designs these days.
Kirby Refrigeration in Australia is a name only, although the wholesaling business was originally a part of James N Kirby. it's now a subsidiary of Beijer Group, a Swedish based multi national.

Have still got one of JN Kirby's Blue Books somewhere. Nice photo of Sir James in the front. In SA they were a great crowd to deal with. but that may have been because of the quantity of equipment that was purchased.

When I went into business for myself Bill Mac. & Ivan looked after me extremely well. The reason Bill Mac was bald in the front only, was because when operating a .303 bullet inner jacket manufacturing machine in WW2, he had his hair ripped out by the lathe that was used to make them & him getting too close. They were made by the buckets full as part of the War Effort by the crowd I worked for.


They really were "the Good Olde Days" then. ( Sighs) Except there was a war on but we didn't mention the War.

Yes,some idiot left it on the bonnet of the panel van in the day and went back looking for it but could never find it

But luckily I still have copies of the capillary charts.

Yes Beijer own Kirby,which were Heatcraft.
Seems if you cant compete with them, just buy them out
Beijer also own ACD,the AC wholesalers.

They did manufacture some excellent equipment but was really glad when the externally sprung B Series disappeared, to be replaced by the AH Series, a much better comp imho.

But at the end of the day, they were mostly all great lumps of things when you had to replace one on a roof & other hard to access places.
