I drove a loan Vee Wee when my Holden HR was in for some panel repairs. I did not want to hand it back, it seemed so good. I can't recall, did they have a 5th gear sort of overdrive because in top she could move like buggery & I was lucky I did not attract the attention of the old Bill.
Drove another one in PNG & that had similar characteristics.
Most VW beetles had four gears, but the "overdrive" question is hardly relevant - all gears were indirect, and from memory fourth was in fact actually tachnically overdrive - output shaft turned faster than the input. But note that the output shaft was actually the layshaft on a conventional box.
