The idea that some folk will slow to 40 and the vast majority will continue at 100 is a recipe for mayhem. Speed differential itself is a massive killer.
Agreed ... I was heading down the Western Highway before Christmas and slowed to 40 when passing a police car and nearly got cleaned up by a couple of vehicles behind me that didn’t see any need to slow down.

Once again, OT I guess. None of the speculation on this site pertains to the investigation into this tragedy.
Was a huge television, radio and newspaper campaign for about 6 weeks leading up to, at and after the introduction of this law - short of knocking on your door, how do they get the point across?

Maybe - but looked at objectively from any safety measurement, freeways are better than any other class of road, even more so if compared by accidents per vehicle - km.

In my case..............I don't watch commercial radio, listen to commercial radio, read the socialist fashion accessory or the little paper, not on stalkbook, don't go past billboards often, etc ............... how would I know?

At the very least vicroads should include these notifications with rego renewals, licence renewals and maybe advertise this stuff on aulro.

Didn't WA abandon a similar law due to the sheer number of rear end accidents and subsequent injuries?

    cheers, DL

Spoke with a local cop who confirmed that many nose to tail collisions occur when they are doing roadside activities...he said basically from someone rubber necking...slowing down too quickly or even stopping completely. Same for roadworks and workers who unfortunately suffer from the same stupidity.

You see the same unawareness in shops where a person will be completely unaware of the massive line forming behind them as they chat to the check out person or fiddle for cards or coins.

    Just humsn nature I guess😐

True, it's not ideal, but it's much better than a single lane in each direction, with opposing traffic going at 100 and merely separated by a strip of paint, and no roadside runoff area, like much of the country's roads.

    Truck driver licensing

This has presumably come to the fore as a result of this accident:

Truck licensing shake-up looms after spike in crashes

Training has been an issue for a while now:

Nationwide hunt to track down suspended truck drivers caught up in training scandal

The mining boom coming back to bite us once again by the looks of that article.

Wonder if something similar will be introduced for towing caravans.... different topic for a different thread.
