The hand of god had nothing to do with it - he just succumbed to the excesses of his life.

The boy from the slums just couldn't handle his new found fame. It's a puzzle as to why the Argentinian people put him up on a pedestal. I guess the last word should come from Maradona himself.
Maradona: The magic and madness that made a legend (thenewdaily.com.au)
On the America sports website Theringer.com, writer Guillermo Blanco was quoted about a night he’d once spent around a home-town campfire with an older and wiser Maradona.
On the fame and his missteps, Blanco recalled the legend uttering perhaps his most tragic sentence: “What the people have to understand is that Maradona is not a machine for making them happy.”

Hmm interesting article.
Lots of it is bollox in my opinion, but still interesting nonetheless.
Stating that the reason a few England football fans still hold a grudge is rooted in their sense of empire is a bit of a stretch!
And anyone who remembers England football teams from the 80s will find the idea of them being 'superior' as a bit laughable
Seems the author had the empire narrative and wanted to crowbar the football context in regardless.
Anyway, RIP Maradona, he was a football genius.
