    Technology for idiot drivers, good or bad?

    Not wishing to hijack, but wanting to extrapolate the lazy driver thread; are the technical aids a help or hindrance?

    Scenario #1: Mt Cotton State School for those who know the location.
    A left hand sweeping bend with the apex on the crest of a hill. Also on the crest is a minor road and hall with a car park on the right, a primary school on the left. Parents use the car park to drop their kids at school, across the road. All roads are well used by heavy vehicles, with a quarry, abattior and grain mill in the immediate vicinity.
    Trucks with autonomous braking, approaching the crest, see cars waiting to enter the main road and panic brake.
    Vote, hindrance.
    If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

    Interesting Ian. replacement drive to hospital at present has adaptive cruise control. You can adjust how many car lengths space from several to one very easily. I am a foot over the brake (not on the brake) type driver regardless. Very interesting to note it working on freeway with cars passing or slowing in other lanes ignored until they stray into the lane I am in. I would give it a tick myself.

    ABS started in 1978 (W116 Mercedes-Benz S-Class) Now on all of our bikes and cars is great tech ; Except for those who like skid marks .
    Self driving noted in Royal Melb hospital is a hoot. Self driving trolleys warn you if they are changing side as the cross the hall way. TUG Peter Susan and Dot

    Interesting that you raise this, Ian. On our last outing to Mt Binga, on the slippery, rocky, dusty sections, I forwent any of the 'Terrain Response' settings in the D3 and just used good old driver input.
    I think both driver and vehicle felt more in unison than when I've used the former. Perhaps a learning curve? Dunno!

    I think it is both good and bad.
    It is dumbing down driving skills. People can't drive manuals, can't control an oversteer slide, understeer plow on, maintain a constant speed manually, turn their head to reverse etc.
    On the other hand, cruise make driving long distances more relaxed, anti skid can save the inexperienced, reversing cameras show the bits that are hard to see.
    ABS annoys me on the dirt & because I learnt to drive without it hardly ever cuts in on the seal. I, now, like autos, just less hassle. But in 99% of my driving I still drive the way I learnt, use my eye's & skills.
    BTW anti skid can be a bit off putting, I'm working on controlling the slide myself when all of a sudden the car starts doing silly stuff.

    Like the disable button for DSC and need it on our 4wda.

    Found another bit of tech with the side mirrors having a Yellow warning indication if a car is on the left or right hand side. My head turns to look before changing lanes so it is interesting not a necessity. Blind Spots would make that a very useful bit of tech, Thumbs up for it. Bigger thumbs up for people who look before they change lanes. A goose reminded me of that a few minutes ago. No harm done happily. No tooting or abuse just a wow from me.

    It’s both good and bad.
    I find after driving our new car with all sorts of driver aids,when getting back in the van,I have to be very carefull to remember it has virtually none.
    Even reversing,at times I wait for it to beep,but it never will.

    FWIW,I really can’t understand why audible reversing sensors on all LV,s,including commercial vehicles is not mandatory,and included in ADR,s.
    These have been proven to save lives of our young ones.
    Sure,reversing cameras are great,but an audible alarm is way better as many still forget to look in the camera.

    Because audible reverse alarms will get a rock through your windscreen at 4am!!!

    On our LVs that leave site and head to town they have the reverse beeper wired to the same switch as the beacon. Beacon off, beeper off.

    Just to clarify,the audible beeper for the driver and audible only in the vehicle,like your D4 has.

    Reversing sensors,maybe I should have been clearer,my bad.

    Not those noisey ones on mine spec and other vehicles.

    I asked that recently too and the response was they can now make the SMF vibration free. I thought that was a load of bull**** so didn't reply. It basically reduces NVH and takes those loads out of the motor and driveline.
