That's the exact reason I think nationalism is crap. Why should anyone feel ashamed and on the same level proud for the actions of their ancestors? Why do you rarely hear people say I'm proud to be x but not I'm proud of the (bad things) x did to get there? You can't have one without the other in a lot of modern cultures. I mean if you've directly profited from nepotism or inherited something derived from the misery or exploitation of others and you haven't addressed that then sure but you had nothing to do with the actions of your ancestors.

It does put you statistically in a more opportune position in the world and I think to a degree we should count that as part of our inheritance but what you do with that is up to you really isn't it. There's a lot of luck involved just to be popped out of a man or a woman's vagina in any place in the world (thought I'd chuck that one in for yous 😂 ). Plus British history is pretty insane they've been invaded and repopulated and on the verge of alcoholic decimation you'd have a pretty interesting dna test result that would surprise most people i reckon

You are right there. Read a while ago about some DNA testing of people in the British Isles and it seems that the people who live on the islands to the left of France are mostly from the Nordics

Seems there was a popular booze cruise from up that way a few years ago and they left more than memories and a hang over

the F bomb , as people here are using the term , is actually a legal terminology , used in courts of law to describe the "offence" Fornicating Under Carnal Knowledge , a common charge against under age prostitution, earlier last century.

The magistrate would ask the prosecutor what the girl is being charged with and the prosecutor would reply "****ing , your Honour"

......and the populace picked it up.

my Maquarie has 16 references to use of the word.

Police will still arrest you if they hear it being used in public.......

You should never never be ashamed of your Ancestry DDB not unless it included Jack the Ripper et al. Then You might have second thoughts, but as that person supposedly was never brought to book it ain't our problem.

As mentioned their actions back then were not our doing.

I am an Australian by birth but my lot before me were English & Scottish. Looking up their history makes me feel quite proud that they went off & improved the world a bit back then.

They may not have been responsible for Digging the Panama or Suez Canal or inventing the Steam Engine etc but in their own way made a contribution to Australia beginning in 1853 & later. South Australia was proclaimed in 1836 but apparently not settled by British convicts although since then there have been a few that have narrowly escaped that title.

It also took some balls to go off & settle in a fairly raw Country like OZ & tolerating sometimes months of Sea Voyage & disease & death only to be landed in a Mosquito infested swamp & have to walk up to Adelaide. The 4 lane Bituminous Port Road didn't exist then, just a rough bush track apparently & Adelaide was then a village of humpies. No No No not Sir Humpie Applelby. On the ship that brought out my Dad's family in 1853 70 kids died of Scarlet Fever at sea so the rest were very fortunate to make it. Total ship's complement was 700 PAX.
On my Mother's side the ship Marion arrived in August 1884 quite a few Children all under 1 year old, (Apx) 20 died en voyage of an unknown "virus" type sickness.

I am proud of my ancestors & have never been called a "Pommy Bastard".

As you may be aware it it quite a popular thing in Australia to have had a Convict in one's lineage way back. Gives one a bit of Street Cred today I believe.

Especially if carried out over the warm bonnet of a Cop Car although I'd bet many cops have tried that one on.

What for? Here in Vic it is no longer an offence, as it can no longer give offense. It is in such general use it is now simply a part of the language. Most coppers swear more than the proverbial sailor.

Hmm. What's your take on Rudd's "apology" then? I did nothing to apologise for, and neither did my ancestors.

More opportune than a high official in the Soviet Union or East Germany. Or the CCCP for that matter, or a high Caste Indian or Thai? Or a cartel in Colombia? It kinda resides in where you get your stats, doesn't it?

The word 'populist' comes to mind. So do many others, but the swear filter would melt down, and I'd get punted to CA.
