Really? both the 2.2 and 2.4 are Ford Duratorq engines, they used the 2.2 to meet even more stringent emission standards EURO5, IIRC. The 2.2 was used in many vehicles besides Ranger and Defender, like Transits, Mondeos, Jags, Everest, BT-50, Citroën and Peugeot, among others. Defenders have also had the TD5 and Tdi (200 & 300) and the beauty of them is lots of different motors can be fitted to them like Perkins, Cummins, Mercedes, LS1, etc.
