There is a sheep dip, you dilute with water. No harm to the dog, super effective. I'll see if I can remember the name. Used on my collie for years on the farm. Cheaper than the supermarket rubbish.

Any of that off the shelf stuff like Frontline, is as useless as t*ts on a bull, if the dog goes out of the house.

Andrew "orally" does that mean you can't talk to your dog about it?

Well i spoke to him about it and he was all for it orally, then i caught the glint in his eye, the dirty dog, so needless to say that's off the cards.
I'll see what i can find out about Ivomec and see if i can get some. Thanks for your help, pulling ticks out nearly every day is really annoying plus i don't won't to miss one, love this bloody dog!.

    FOR DOGS:

Daily searching and manual removal of ticks is the only 100% method.

Frontline and Advantix still work, but the number of ticks around appears to be on the rise. Advantix seems to work better.

Preventic collars work OK, can combine with Frontline/Advantix

Malawash etc - incredibly toxic, I wouldn't recommned using it, yes it kills ticks, but can kill you and your dog with repeated exposure. Not good for families with young children - contact with the dog can be toxic!

Fidos Fre-itch rinse: Cheap, works very well, have to apply regularly (every few days), and safe, especially for kids in contact with dogs

Permoxin: Cheap, use weekly, some dogs can have nasty reaction to the stuff.

Proban: Tablets every second day, basicly giving your dog low dose poison, reasonably effective.

Ivomec will kill ticks, but doesn't work fast enough to be useful for control of paralysis ticks, especially in summer. Ivomec kills tick in 4-5 days, tick kills dog in 2-3 days (during summer, can take up to 3 weeks in winter). Ivomec can be used orally, just need to get the dose right, and don't use in collies.

    FOR CATS:

Fidos Fre-itch rinse and Frontline Spray are your only choices. Everything else will kill your cat just as quick as the Ticks will.

    FOR POCKET PETS:

Fidos Fre-itch rinse is the only safe thing to use.

Looking forwards to the tick season, need a few new toys

And as I said above: Daily searching of all your pets is the best method of prevention of tick paralysis.

Yeah that's what we had to do whilst in Switzerland, though at least they don't have paralysis tics over there.

Everynight we'd sit and pat our dogs for an hour or so after we got home, and pay attention straight away if they started scratching.

Was a real pain until we got onto the frontline, which worked wonders (for normal tics). Take a look at their coats and imagine trying to search through that

We did it though and because the doggies got all the attention they loved it.

One cool little device we found was a tic remover, worked wonders for removing tics - though the little tic remover device seem to be a little sparse on the ground here in Aus. Was shaped like a little curvy "Y" thingy and was great for removing the little buggars.

Crump remind me never to let you give my dog a bone,

anyway, when you scrub the dog in cattle wash what would happen when the dog (as dogs do) lick themselves (cause they can)

The only problem with malwash is the smell, I'd be finding a present for the dog to roll in just to get rid of the malwash odour
