    Surely the purpose of a lockdown is to limit the spread by reducing people's movement and contact.

    It stops the exponential growth in the number of cases.

    If it does that, then the lockdown has worked. It isn't a valid criticism of lockdowns that they have not done something that they are not designed to do.

    The lockdowns in NZ and Vic were intended to eliminate the virus. That's why we didn't re-open until we'd had a series of double-donut days. Elimination was achieved by preventing onward transmission for a period of time at least as long as the lifecycle of the virus, which was in turn achieved by getting people to stay at home and minimise movement in the community.

    The point is that what worked in Melbourne against the first variants of the virus didn't work against Delta because it was just too transmissible and we didn't see numbers fall the way that they did in lockdown 2.0. So, it became obvious that vaccination was the only way out, hence the big push on it. If this new variant is even more transmissible than Delta then lockdowns may not help much. In addition, the community has probably had it with lockdowns so compliance is likely to be an issue. So - masks and, if necessary, updated vaccines.

    And if the Omnicron variant is more transmissible that will make it even less likely that the unvaccinated will avoid infection.

    No Severe COVID Cases Among Vaccinated Patients Infected With Omicron, Top Israeli Expert Says
    Quote 'Prof. Dror Mevorach, head of the coronavirus department at Hadassah University Hospital Ein Karem, said the preliminary reports on the clinical condition of people infected with the new variant are encouraging. “If it continues this way, this might be a relatively mild illness compared to the delta variant, and paradoxically, if it takes over, it will lead to lower infection rates,” and it will be easier to deal with globally.'

    It's probably timely to remind people it is not back to where we were two years ago. We now have a better understanding of how the virus is transmitted from person to person, a better understanding of how to treat and manage cases when people get infected. We have vaccines & Mrna technology that allows us to adapt quickly to a changing virus, and we will have second generation vaccines. There has not been a variant of concern that has been able to completely escape the effect of vaccines. Waning immunity may translate into more post vaccine infections, but that is yet to be determined. Booster doses do boost the antibody response, and are probably our best defence ATM.

    Here is an article from The Atlantic, " the body is far from helpless against Coronavirus variants";

    I wonder if anyone has noticed that OMICRON is an anagram of MORONIC.

    Make of that what you will.

    Not so brilliant when you consider his legs are only 30 cm long. J1 would clock that up before reaching his front gate & his chubby little legs would be going like the clappers..
