So you think this can be stopped? Close your border forever, see how that pans out for WA.

The Federal Govt and all States and Territories with the exception of WA are now basically thinking along the same lines - the odd jurisdiction out is WA - what does WA know that the rest of the country does not understand - it is time to live with the virus but some just go back to the back of their cave and hide and pretend all is good.

WA approach is the right one - keep telling yourself that lie if it makes you feel better- other Australians are not prisoners in their own States or Territories.

So looking on the Govt of WA website, for up to date info,2020-21,mining is 47% of total Gross State Product.
The next at 5% is construction.

    So the predominant industry is?
Maybe not the biggest employer, but definitely the predominant industry in the state by a country mile.

They also mention WA interstate tourism and international tourism is suffering due to lockdowns…..no surprise there.

Anyway, make the most of the WA Covid situation, because once the place opens up it will all change,as it has everywhere else.

Actually, Japan's numbers are likely to be dodgy. They don't have a lot of Covid cases because they were only doing something like 2000 tests a day nationally at one point last year. Yet a couple of months ago their hospital system was completely overwhelmed by Covid.

You could well be right - makes the Australian position look better. But this is past, and does not necessarily hold for the future.

And perhaps worth noting that looking at the history of past pandemics, one thing that stands out is that those economies that take the route of dropping all precautions in the name of the economy actually have worse economic outcomes than those that follow medical advice. If the public think that it is dangerous to engage in an activity they won't do so. See the reports of mass cancellations of bookings as cases rise in NSW. For example, far fewer crowds last night than even last year.

People who think economy is all about business are deluded. Economies are driven by people. They earn, they spend, they travel, they eat, drink, build and die. All of these activities drive the economy. Look after the people first and Business will prosper as a result.

The Feb 5 opening date for WA to open up is not yet written in stone and looking at the massive increases in the numbers of infections/hospitilisations in the States that have opened up and have at the same time loosened the preventative measures to reduce the spread of this virus there is a real chance that that date will be changed.

The Feb5 date is also dependant on at least 90% of Western Australians 12+ having had at least 2 doses of vaccine, The full vaccination rate for 12+ in WA is at 84.3% as of 29/12/21

As has been pointed out before, it was NSW and Victoria (and, to a smaller extent, QLD) that ran the risk of Covid by running the quarantine process for people returning to Australia. A lot of the people who processed through NSW and Vic were residents of other States who then went back to their States after they'd done quarantine in NSW and Victoria. I'm no fan of NSW's whack-a-mole approach to outbreaks but credit where it's due - after the first debacle they did process a lot of people through hotel quarantine without letting in Covid, up until the limo driver stuff-up. The other States and Territories didn't permit international arrivals - in fact Tasmania hasn't had an international flight of any type for years - so there wasn't much management going on in the smaller States, just closing their borders and letting a couple of other States take the risks for them.

But the bigger question is this - WA has had nearly two years to prepare for an increase in hospitalisations due to Covid when it opens its borders - has it done so? Apparently not:
