The good thing is now we will get to see if keeping borders closed does make a difference. It only took 1 case in the community for the NSW and VIC outbreaks to start.

Omicron has also made it into NZ - so will see how they go as well. They look to be ramping up restrictions quicker than WA has.

The only thing VIC and NSW could have done differently is we did not go back into lockdown. Perhaps that was a mistake and we will never know - but after 9 months in lockdown it was never going to be a palatable option in Melbourne.

The fact is, people are probably applying more restrictions themselves now anyway.

With family in Perth I am looking forward to seeing WA show us a better way.
What NSW did was to abandon restrictions on the unvaccinated, masks, and most social distancing restrictions just as omicron was expected to arrive, despite medical advice, and encourage large scale gatherings coming up to Christmas.

The results were predicted and inevitable - a major spike in cases, supply chain problems, hospitals on the brink, deaths, an overwhelmed tracing system - and a worse economic hit than previous lockdowns as people simply stay at home.

For WA to open their border with low vaccination and booster figures without a similar hit would require their introducing a lot more restrictions than they have at present (which they may have to anyway as omicron seeps in), and a lot of WA residents will not like this. But their state, their decisions.

What a lot of people (including the NSW Premier) seem unable to grasp is that there is a wide field of options between lockdown and "let 'er rip", and these enable a much better outcome than either.

I don't like the AMA president much but its interesting that he is basically calling the WA premier a liar.

I have issues with a medical professional that is advocating to introduce a life threatening virus into the community regardless of his position in the AMA hierarchy.

Well you only have to look at AULRO as a good example of this. Covid Mk ll

One thing I do know, there are a lot of experts here that know more about Land Rovers and give better advice and support than JLR or LRA. Now that is a fact! Covid Mk ll

Speaking of facts and statistics - here is an interesting one (and sad one if you are male and enjoy driving cars).

Motor vehicle accidents account for 40,000 hospitalisations and 1,000 deaths a year - that is a lot. Males account for almost 2/3rds of this. But the worst thing is - around half of these hospitalisation and deaths are not the driver who caused the accident and yet we still allow people (and surprisingly males) to drive cars.

But this is where the misuse of statistics comes into play - Did you know that Toyota drivers are responsible for around 20% of all car accident hospitalisations and deaths? Disqualify Toyota owners from driving cars, force them to use public transport, and you would see a 20% reduction in hospitalisation and deaths. If total suppression is the goal then extend this to anyone who drives an Asian car. Covid Mk ll

I am joking - the stats above are real (maybe, sort of, hey do your own research) but this is how social media misuse statistics. I heard an anti-vaxxer nurse say over 90% of people with chronic underlying conditions are vaccinated and our hospitals are at capacity and full of them (yes this sounds correct). She goes on - this was her argument for why she did not want to be vaccinated - vaccinated people are getting sick (wtf!). And the media jumped on it and reported it - with no attempt to qualify what a ridiculous argument this was. 🤪

But that is just your non-medical opinion Trout. One would think as a medical doctor and head of the AMA there he would know what the risks were and were not...mmm.

    Cheers

Disappointed and relieved was the stand out for me. Disappointed WA is not ready, and for many relieved we are giving more time to get ready. So use this time wisely.

And on the flip slide - this was McGowans promise made in December.

The date was “locked in” and we will be ready he proclaimed. And there was great rejoicing.

My new office is in Collins Street and I went in yesterday. The city was like a ghost town and it's now an issue trying to find somewhere to buy lunch because I'd guess that at least 70% of the places have shut down. I went into a food court that still has a couple of booths operating and stopped in front of a curry place - there were no staff and I was about to leave when the owner came sprinting up. I'm guessing that he doesn't currently see a lot of customers.

And if you have a look at the tennis you'll notice that there's hardly anyone there: there were plenty of empty seats on Sunday.

So, as it turns out, when you remove restrictions when there's a huge surge in Covid most employers, like mine, will simply tell their staff to stay at home until things settle down. Similarly, most people will exercise common sense and stay at home rather than go to, for example, the tennis. And as it turns out, people also haven't been that keen to go on holiday in the countryside or even just travel around: I went up to the west of the State last weekend and after Ballarat barely saw another car.

Different story in Lakes Entrance, busy as bourke st down there.

I dont see the point of restrictions now, if the majority of the population are vaccinated then get rid of them. Its only the health compromised and tin foil hat brigade that are getting sick from it and who knows how many would have died from the common flu anyway.
