Thread: Covid Mk ll

Well, its been an interesting couple of weeks, eldest daughter went into hospital in Canberra two weeks ago today for heart surgery. We went in to pick her up on the Friday to discover at 11:00 that both she and SWMBO had been declared close contacts as a result of working at a primary exposure site. Eventually the hospital stopped freaking out and spraying them with glen 20 and my daughter got a covid test before discharge. We all went home and isolated, the rest of us got tests on Saturday morning in Yass.

We had a house divided with two of us isloated for two weeks and the other two being secondary contacts being allowed out after the tests came back negative (which they did)

We organised with the local GP for eldest daughter to have her post op checkup done. All was OK until she called them from the carpark to go into the surgery and they did a "tele consult" which consisted of her removing her dressing in the car in the carpark and assessing if it was ok herself. No photos, no video link, just do you reckon it looks ok? if so go home. (not very happy with that one) Two days later daughter presented to emergency with a splitting headache we were worried that may have been a side effect of the medication she is on, but the hospital was fantastic, reassuring her and doing a proper follow up, they also did second tests on both SWMBO and daughter which both came back negative.
It seems the headache was a side effect of another bug that is going around which my younger daughter has and woke up with a sore throat and headache on Tuesday morning, so me and her were off for another covid test and are still isolating waiting for results - hopefully sometime today.


Some observations:

There is no clarity on the ACT/NSW border with the ACT saying that residents from surrounding postcodes are all able to go into Canberra but on the Friday we went in to pick up our daughter the border coppers told us that NSW wouldn't let us back home.(we escaped successfully) We did get a text from the federal member saying it was OK but NSW is silent on the matter.....

Supermarket home delivery is woefully inadequate. We did an online order on Friday for delivery Tuesday. The order had items like bread an milk deleted because they were "temporarily unavailable" - yeah right. We managed with one of the Girl's friends doing a shop for us until the texts came back negative.

I'm firmly convinced that if one of the girls did actually have covid we would have all got it. Quarantining in a house with one bathroom and kitchen is unlikely to be effective, this is being demonstrated in Sydney on a daily basis.

The "Infectious in the community" line that we all see in the media is somewhat misleading and only creates more angst because it looks like you are infectious pretty much immediately with Delta. Using the girl's timeline their site was declared a close contact location from the Tuesday and they were notified via the media on the Friday, hence they would have been potentially infectious in the community for 3 days. This line is often used in a manner that puts the blame on the infectious person which I reckon is a bit unreasonable.

I fully sympathise with those in Sydney and can completely understand how impossible it would be to even get basic supplies without breaking isolation rules and facing a huge fine. Not to mention being cooped up in an overcrowded house, we've got an 8000 square metre yard and plenty to do so its not too bad in comparison.

Crikey Tote for a minute there I was sure you were going to advise that I was a secondary contact for associating with your tribe a couple of weeks ago. I do remember you mentioned daughter might have been exposed through the workplace - glad it did not pan out. Phew missed that one - thanks,

So for any future interactions with your family I should bring my rosary beads, a jug of holy water and a garlic necklace - oh I forgot the crucifix as well.

Seriously, I am glad all worked out in the end but the carpark episode is just not acceptable. I hope all works out with minimal further issues.

In the last couple of weeks there have a *lot* of new studies out assessing vaccine efficacy, many of which have touched on the question of waning immunity.

Let’s start with last week’s Oxford paper, the most significant study to date on waning immunity to Covid.

The researchers found signs that vaccine efficacy against symptomatic infection erodes over time, and that waning may occur faster in some vaccines than others.

Tough time, but hope it all works out.
The NSW contact tracers seem to be up to 4 days behind at the moment, which is understandable with so many cases.
Wouldn't the NSW residents outside the ACT be under stay at home orders?

Both of them change their tune more times than a jukebox.

PM: below average effort, but not quite as bad as failed miserably.
SP: balanced approached that the rest of the world took as an option.
the failure has been in the quarantine stage, and i think all states have have issues with this. even new zealand failed with this.
another failure was in the flatten the curve strategy. i believe NSW got the mitigation part right, but they, and every other state have failed to increase their healthcare capacity.
