A Warn 9000lb winch won't pull anything like 9000lb (which is probably a good thing because the cables they come with are only rated to 8000lb ).
It makes me Wonder why the Governments of Australia allow ALL of these winch manufacturers (Warn included) to advertise and sell their winches stating the Guaranteed Breaking Stain (GBS) of the cable supplied. The Safe Working Load (SWL) or the Working Load (WL) which should have a Safety Factor (SF) of around 6 (GBS divided by SF e.g. 12000 divided by 6) should be the advertised strength of the winch and cable. A simple calculation for wire cable strength is Dia. Squared and Multiplied by 10, i.e. 10mm cable (six strand) Galvanised wire would be 10x10x10 = 1000klgs. SWL for winch wire which is (or should be to stop crushing) 7 strand and sometimes High Tensile you can add about 20 to 30% more. Most winches are the same gearwise and motorwise, it is the strength of the cable that determines it's capacity, i.e. 12000lbs (GBS), but if you work to the GBS you are asking for trouble, I think it is extremely dangerous and wrong, the way winches are advertised, Regards Frank.

I did some investigating and sent him a personally addressed letter to his home address saying if I didn't get a replacement I would personally return the winch with some KY gel if you get the drift Well with the shock of him realizing I knew his name and his home address he said he would send a replacement and he did (3 weeks later) I asked him where he wanted me to send the bust one and he said keep it.
I put the new one in today and dismantled the broke one to see what was wrong.. all that was wrong was a plastic washer which separates the planetary gears had dislodgeds and jammed up in a tooth groove causing the gear to derail a Millimetre or so causing the free spin... removed said plastic, replace washer, repacked with grease, tested it and works like a charm.... So now I have 2 x 12000lb winchs, cables, hooks, remotes and battery leads all for $370......alls well that ends well...
Dirty Dawg, it would be wise to repack with a Good quality Waterproof grease your freebie as the melted down "soap" the Chinese call grease will only hasten the demise of the roughly cut gear sets, also have a look at the collar that the gear change lever goes through, mine was only pressed in and soon came loose and fell out of the gear housing, I stripped mine down an welded this collar in, it's a lot quieter with some decent Real grease as well, Regards Frank.

The very reason why I run a hydraulic winch, which comes with much stronger wire rope than the ARB's.
That's my next project.......get it running in the D3
