    Second Skin sound deadning materials

I am in the process of trying to get a shipment from the U.S. for some of this material for my Defender. Is there anyone else interested in having some shipped out? Seems to be good stuff, and a very informative web site, along with forum. Not cheap, but would make a world of difference to the noise while riding along the freeway.

Here is a link to their forums.

Nylex used to have a great of sound absorbent, sound reflective, and sound barrier materials available here. We used a lot of it in the 80's & 90's when the miner's and oil tanker drivers unions got heavy on safety and noise levels and daily noise doses. Yellow Pages and/or internet might tell if they are still about.

    Sound and Heat insulation

    Incisor,

I have seen what you sell, and will purchase some in the near future. I also want some barrier to put in the engine bay, and around the transmission tunnel to cut heat, and noise. Do you know on any product in Aus that will do this, and will not absorb water? I will buy local items vs overseas any day, but have not been able to source any here.

    Thanks for any info ,

    Ken

    G'day Ken

3m sell a product called flashtac. Its an Aluminium backed Tar compound designed to repair roofing iron. I've used it extensively on the canopy of the Landy and am intending to use it to line the guards on the tray. Its self adhesive and comes in a variety of sizes. Using it is a **** load easier than tar painting and it certainly is a good metal protector n sound deadener with the added benefit of having an Aluminium heat reflecting surface.

Its available in the painting section of any Bunnings H/ware store.

    Cheers

    it will help a bit...

regarding stuff available in Oz - my MIL used to work in Bostik in Melbourne where they made all the sound deadening panels for ford fairlanes and also the undercarriage spray-on stuff. I have no idea where it can be bought retail, but it is available... clark rubber also have closed cell foil backed foam meant for engine bays... be warned it's not cheap!

My county has 15mm closed cell foam glued under the transmission tunnel and all over the interior, installed by a previous owner... it's coming out and having a coat of hippo liner then going back in again sometime soon!

I use a fibreglass matting based material that is an inch thick before being compressed, made a massive difference to mine noise and heat wise. Remember i'm running a chev diesel, not the quietest, coolest running motor around. But i'm really happy
Got in Dandenong ($99 a metre, used about 1.5 metres)

The best is the lead filled foam with a reflective foil layer on the outside next to the noise source. This does the three, reflection, absorption, and barrier. Not cheap. It was the only product that could get a skid steer loader to meet the requirements of a coal mine as to daily noise dose.

I went into this a bit a few years ago when I was going to put a Chev 6.2L diesel in my 80 Rangie.
I stripped out the whole interior including dashboard and got all the wiring out of the way. Then I sprayed the interior 4mm thick with some stuff that cost about $300 for 20L On top of this went flexible closed cell foam sheet with foil backing, then the usual carpet underlay then new carpet. There is just the Rangerover stuff on the engine side of the firewall but the underside of the bonnet got the same treatment + inside the section in front of the windscreen. Then I put it all back together....and sold the Chev 6.2 .
There are several companies dealing in materials for sound and heat proofing in Brisbane ,I used stuff from 2 of them. I'm sure there are even more in Syd and Mel.
A few minutes with the hard copy Yellow pages will turn them up.
