or do you now find it amusing......and have a laugh about it yourself.......

    Sometimes I get annoyed.

Yesterday I bought a Coleman catalytic heater. I attached the gas bottle, turned on the gas and looked for the red igniter button.

    Nope.

    The igniter is missing.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a new Navig8r G35 GPS. I hadn't had a chance to test it before going to Singapore.

I tried it out the other night going to pickup something for Mr Whippy. That trip into the depths of Glenmore Park was a nightmare. 1-1/2 hours to go 5km there and km back. The GPS had me heading everywhere but where I needed to go. In the end the bloke from whom I was collecting the goods stayed on the phone and gave me turn by turn instructions how to get to his place. Glenmore Park is a nightmare in daylight - at night it's worse!

No wonder I had problems with the GPS. It tried to get me to turn down non-existent streets. The proposed route also wanted to go diagonally across the map, not along the roads.

I couldn't navigate by looking at the screen as it looked really odd. When I got home I looked closely at the screen and found:

    (a) The maps are upside down.
    (b) The north arrow points south.
    (c) Some of the streets shown don't exist - at all!
    (d) Some streets are displaced laterally, for example, the street to the south of mine is shown between my street and the next street to the north of me.
    (e) Some straight streets are shown with right-angle bends in them.
    (f) Some streets are shown twice on the same screen but in different locations.

I know you think I'm joking but see some screen shots below:

In this shot, noting that I live in Gwandalan St., Forbes St is a straight road and should be south of me. Cary St is also straight and is north of Gwandalan.

Hunter and Yodalla Streets should be parallel with Gwandalan. Stansbury doesn't loop like that and it should join with Cary. The major street, Nepean, to which Cary, Hunter, Yodalla, and Forbes all join at 90 degrees is missing from the map.

At least in this image north is up (I think). No, wait. Yodalla and Hunter run NW-SE but the GPS shows them running north.

This is a Google map of the area:

I got onto the Navig8r forum and found out how to fix it. Download and install new firmware. Done and it works.

I've been having problems with a leaking toilet inlet valve. I haven't been able to fix it so today I gave up and bought a new inlet valve assembly.

    I fitted it and.................

    ......... it's faulty.

    Oh, well, back to Bunnings.

A while back I replaced the fuel pump (which includes the fuel level sender) and gradually the fuel level decreased until it always showed empty.

This hasn't been a big hassle as I usually run on LPG. However, the LPG system has died and I can't get a replacement part. The importer is blaming the volcano disrupting parts shipments from Europe.

As I'm going back to work tomorrow, I need an accurate petrol gauge.

So today I pulled the fuel pump out -- a real hassle as I had to cut a hole in the floor or drop the 155 litre long range tank. I cut a hole.

I compared the float weight from the new pump with the old pump (which I had fortunately kept) and it was noticeably heavier in my hand. On a set of scales, it was twice the weight.

The new float is some sort of foam plastic. I examined it with a magnifying glass and found it had a fine split in the outer surface.

I cut off a piece of the float and could see liquid in the interstices. I squeezed the foam in a pair of pliers and petrol dripped out of it.

Bloody Asian-made aftermarket parts - at least I assume they are! I don't know where this very Western Sydney-based parts importer get their stuff but I'm very reluctant to buy off them anymore.

Really, their parts are more trouble than they are worth but the trouble is one doesn't know at purchase time from where the parts originate.

Now I'll try to swap the float from the original pump to the replacement pump.

But first I'll get a bucket of petrol and see if the foam float actually floats in petrol.
