    is it getting fuel pressure?

if the intank pump isnt playing nice your not going to get a start.

Try push/pull starting it if its a manual, the voltage drop on start can cause the pump to have a hard time.

how can it crank without turning over?
check glow plugs. if these little suckers are stuffed, the motor will turn over for ever without firing.
    fuel is important too
other than that, it will probably something computer related which will be hard to diagnose without a service program and analyser.

Barney has mistaken your V8 for a Diesel, so you don't need to look for glow plugs....

You're going to have to start problem solving and work backwards from the basics. I've only got diesels so not sure if you've got EFI (presume you would in a 97), but you have to make sure you've got fuel up at the engine (not just in the tank), and a spark happening.

Someone who knows V8s will come along and post something more useful then me!

If it has fuel (in the tank), spark and a good battery then I would think dead fuel pump. I assume it is getting air

My cousin's 2003 Rodeo did this. Ran perfectly one day and dead the next. I stripped the fuel pump down, cleaned it out and put it back together and it has ran fine ever since.

thanks for pointing that out spudboy. that is what happens when you are reading a post while watching 4wdtv.
V8, yep 97 would have efi and electronic ignition. fuel, spark and air. start with that. to the engine, not just in the tank either. if you've satisfied these 3 criteria, you're going to have to get a little more technical. if for some reason the timing is way out, it may not fire. as my V8 is fairly primitive and is still running carbys, i can't help you with the fuel injection.
    good luck
