Thanks folks, I think that about covers it.
I think I will go with a cross between mns488 and the 4x4equip one.
Looks easy enough and I can make it easy to remove but lockable with long shank padlocks.
Thanks again
Hi Aaron,
i enlarged the photo a bit.
its just a latch and gate holding it.
serves my purposes and the entire thing comes off when i need.

The worst thing is tyre changes, it comes off to do a change.
oh well, i'm happy with it.

Be wary of these type of arrangements when doing tougher than normal 4x4ing,come off a drop off and the highlift can hit causing alot of grief to the door. The tyre is protected from contact by the bumper, the highlift isnt.

I made the 1 millionth AULRO post
My Highlift goes on the rack not on the back, this is just for the shovel and axe.
Here is the photos of the shovel holder that Michael2 made. If enough people are interested he has suggested he may make a few more for sale. I think it looks like the ducks nuts
"
I made one for the defender that bolts onto the Kaymar rear wheel carrier. It carries a shovel, an axe and a pick.
Theres a cradle at the bottom for the axe head and it must go in on an angle, then sit upright, that way it can't jump out of place. The shovel slides in in front of the axe, the pick/mattock handle slots in behind the shovel and beside the axe. There's a cradle / recess at the bottom with a bolt welded on where the mattock head goes and then a large washer & wingnut hold that into place.
Nothing's fallen off or become dislodged even with rough off road driving.
If I could post some pics, I'd do it. But email me and I can email you photos. My prototype cost about $30-$40 to make, and that included $20 for zinc plating. I was thinking of making a few improved ones and selling them for around $100 on ebay, but haven't found the motivation to yet."
