G,day.
The latest Overlander mag (june) has an article about the new 76 GXL.
They did a comparison with a 3ltr Patrol. Silly idea, but there ya go.
The in and out dimensions are interesting. For instance, the rear passengers have more shoulder room than the Patrol and the cargo bay
is also wider and higher but same length.
They stated that once it is rolling the first four gears just get in the way
as you only need use fifth, up hill and down dale. I test drove one the other day and I can tell you that they are a powerhouse.
We have to remember that this new 76 is released as a commercial vehicle, not an SUV. They already make SUV,s with the Landcruiser,
Prado and Rav4 etc.
It is sparten, simple and easy to work on and maintain. The suspension is simple, rugged and well proven. I prefer leaves at the rear, its what I
have grown up with. There is already a lot of after market add ons such
as bars, steps, suspension upgrades, draws and long range tanks etc.
if thats the way you want to go ?
I had despaired that the good old days of truck design had gone but
this new 76 is a beauty. It has very little of that onboard computer
gibberish which means you can actually put a spanner to it ! Oh joy !
Its got a proper handbrake setup working on the rear discs that doesn't
fill up with crap so that a computer imoblilises the vehicle !
I like the boxy shape. I also like this same shape in the Hummer 2 and 3,
Jeeps etc. They have dropped the rounded shape Cherokee and gone
back to the square look for 08 but loaded ( shudder ) with computer crap.
None of them look as good as the Defender but much better than Prado's
and Pajero's etc. If you want a bloody motor car buy a ( go )Ford.
I like its design, simplicity and its old fashioned ( ? ) approach in a brand
new vehicle.
My only complaint is that its made by them Whale killing Basterds.
But if I cant get a new Defender 90 without importing, guess what ?
Cheers.
Not so mysterious. It had a head on collision with a Mini.
What was mysterious was how the Mini came to be there on a closed road.
See http://www.citroen.mb.ca/cItROeNeT/s...rathon-68.html and the quote:
Ron (ex-owner of a Hillman Hunter Royal 660 - a rebadged Hunter GT which won the Marathon)It was rumoured that the occupants of the Mini were a pair of off-duty policemen who were both `drunk as skunks'.
