Thread: I made a fool of myself today.

    I can beat that I think, this is totally true.
    My first ever oil change when my age still ended in ….teen.

    I ran the engine for a while to get the oil warm and slid the pan under the sump and started to undo the plug. So far so good.
    The HOT oil ran down my arm to my arm pit and onto the drive then I promptly dropped the plug into the oil pan as I was moving the pan to catch the oil. Which failed miserably hence half the oil ended up on the drive.

    So as per JDNSW I refilled the engine with oil, (no plug) which over ran the oil pan again onto the drive. Oh well, I got the pan and poured it back into the engine, you guessed it no plug and oil pan in hand the oil again went down the drive.

    That was the last mistake but damn I was sooooo glad it was on my brother drive

    Yes, I've seen a couple of qual mechanics do that, it's just called having a bad day.

    Worst oil change for me was the gearbag on the disco. Without a decent drum pump at home I resorted to a cheapo syringe style pump from supercreep. It was bypassing so badly that as I pumped oil into the filler a good half of the oil was running out the back of the pump onto my chest, my face, even in my ear!! From there it ran thru my sinus passages and I could taste trans fluid for hours!
    I had no choice but to keep going to get oil back in it. Speed was the key, so while I stayed laid underneath (soaked thru) I had to call SWMBO in to stand at the side of the car with the oil bottle at the ready, she would fill the cartridge for me and I would quickly pump it in before it all drained out the back of the pump. Picture something akin to trap shooting - SWMBO would call FULL and away I went...

    That's a great story. Sort of reminds me of 44 gallon drums, a 2" pump, mollasses and Mrs Numpty. But that's another story.

    not oil change but funny

    I had an direct feed type oil pressure gauge in my series 3.
    It was mounted beside a amp meter on the tray that runs across from where the speedometer is located.
    Unknown to me the amp meter must have had a short it melted the oil line to the gauge.
    I knew nothing until my feet started feeling strangely warm.
    It was winter time so the warm was nice, as the heater was never plumbed correctly.
    I don't know has much oil I list, but I do know there is a series 3 with a well protected fire wall.
    And my navy issue Dunlap volleys were never the same again

    This was an oil change to eclipse all oil changes. A few years ago one of our apprentice aircraft engineers was told to drain the engine oil in the tug and refill it from the 200 litre drum, and he did, completely to the top of the rocker hat.
    He was a 1st year apprentice so I guess he had an excuse.
