At last a decent landy club with local content, I am canberra based I have a series 1 basket case in the rainy day basket and my current love is an 82 series 3 four cylinder 109, she come to Australia in 92 from Singapore after spending 10 years in Africa, she is most likely ex army from some rogue state, she some weird features not seen locally, for starters the hard top is steel not alloy but its factory, it has a hatch over passenger seat, thinking its ex nato too, it has dual wheel cylinder brakes on front with 11 in drums and 11 inch drums on rear, the suspension is raised 3 inches, has a massive v8 size radiator and a huge oil cooler which for some reason there is a temp gauge fitted to the sump, it had a dual battery system but it wasnt military wiring its rough so I pulled it out, she has electronic igniton and a salisbury diff,
Some advice from those in the know here , I was having dreams of fitting a holden motor, am I doing the wrong thing? what would her road speed be with 7.50x16 tyres I havent driven her yet she had 12 years in a yard, her speedo shows only 60,000 ks which I beleive is genuine, her exhaust is best described as a joke about 1 and 1/4 diameter its pathetic, whats best to fix this?
some years ago I owned a series 2a exarmy 109 in Canberra, she had hard and soft tops she could be recognised by having one high cut guard and one standard, is she still doing the rounds? I resprayed her in army drab not long before selling and shehad huge bull lights on the front, would like to know if shes about still or if someone knows who owns her now. Good luck to all

If you go Holden I have a bell housing adaptor from S2a if that matches up to S3.

Sounds like it may have been a V8 once. These are found on the Stage 1.
Other people are happy with their conversions, provided they are done right. I have heard good and bad stories. Personally I favour keeping the LR engine, or putting in a V8.
I have a Stage 1 V8. It cruises comfortably at 100ks on the open, straight road. Cornering ain't too good though. Goes faster than that and is quieter when doing 80ks, but annoys other drivers too much. The exhaust is probably ok for the 4 cylinder engine, the V8 has 2".
Does your odometer have 5 or 6 numbers on it? If it has 5 it has probably been around the clock a few times.

3 inch lift is interesting - chassis or spring?
The hard top does sound similar to the Qld ones. They are rounded at the front, and look "factory" (coz they were, just not Land Rover factory)
Is the history known? Or a "mate told a mate" kind of thing? Ex-mil "rogue" African state Landies could be expected to have some form of mine protection (extra plates in the back of the wheel arches for starters.)
Post some photos - plenty of ex-Africans on here plus more military men than you can poke a bayonet at ...

Welcome mate sounds like a interesting ride you have and on a personal note dont go the holden engine apart and from wrecking the history of such a car the only gain will be constant replacement of engines
A good healthy 2 & 1/4 four engine does go well
If you want a car that will sit on a 100 ks either fit a over drive or high speed t/c or buy a road car
The best series i owned had a leyland terrier v8 with a tojo g/box and t/c that thing would do over the old ton but being a series it was all over the road like a mad womans poo![]()
Pretty much what I thought, but I was being diplomatic
Some drivers do stupid things around slow vehicles, like getting themselves and others killed because of their impatienceSo I usually stick to around 85-90 ks, slowing for corners, unless the road has a straight stretch or I'm on the motorway, then it's 90-95ks. More than that and the fuel economy drops, ummm, fast.

To the best of my knowledge the old girl was lifted by stretching the hangers, the front hangers are actually welded to the chassis, she has quiet heavy spring packs and there is an ingenious method how the spare top main spring is carried which involves the tow bar, its real stiff in the ride from the short distance I have driven the old thing, when it will stay in hi, the selector spring I fear has carked it.
The history is half and half known, I dont know how it got to Africa but it had 9,000k when it started is trip, all the service dates were and are still recorded above the windscreen in texta, its been all over africa, it left Africa and went to Singapore onits way to Darwin, it has a private vehicle import plate under the hood which is dated 1/92, it toddled around South oz and the kimbereleys and ended up in Canberra where it was last registered in 95, I bought it of a mate who had it in his wrecking yard and I took pity on it and now throw love at it with gay abandon hoping it will carry us around the country again when the kids are gone from the nest.
With the top to describe it better, if u look at the back end of most hardtopped landys the rear upper door area , well mine is straight with the gutter the top door doesnt infringe on the roof section like all series 2 s and 3s I have seen, it also has a nice Donaldson aircleaner on the gaurd and interstingly the element was last changed in alice springs in 93.
I shall endeavour to get some photos of the old trollop, shes not looking her best being half painted and all but u will all get the gist.![]()
