Steel=Heavy but you can weld it if it breaks.
Alloy=Light but if it breaks you can't just get a bush mechanic to fettle it.

Dunno if you can get them for your car, but I have a lot of faith in Thule racks.
I carry kayaks a lot, often 4 or 5 up on the roof, and the Thule roof bars have never skipped a beat. Most other kayakers I know also swear by them. We abuse the hell out of racks.. heaps of up force, not always gentle loading and unloading, often boats that have been in salt water. The boats I carry range in weight from 10 to 20kg each, depending on what I'm doing.
I had one set bought 2nd hand on a subaru that went from melbourne to darwin return via kakadu, litchfield and other places, plus another couple of melbourne/Alice Springs runs, all with 2 or 4 boats on the roof and a lot of other kayak carrying in between. I sold those racks with the car, still like new.
I've now got another set of thule racks on the forester which carries boats several times a week (think ones on it now, cant remember if I took it off), as well as a lot of interstate runs loaded up boats and gear.
Of course, on the defender I have an old school full length steel rack.. but its damn heavy, and definately not a 1 person job to remove. It also has a noticable effect on the COG, on and offroad, and its very noticeable in an emergency swerve situation.
I got steel for the simple reason that I can weld steel, but not aluminium, and it was in the right place at the right time at the right price. I have a vague plane to get an aluminium one someday...
Not sure if this helps... but there you go.
cheers
Dave
