So you had the taller tyres and no CDL, have I got it right.

Do you put it down to the taller tyres giving you the advantage.

    Howdy,

Just for my 3cents worth, I was on the Border track 3 weekends ago. My 01 D2 TD5 manual with 245/70/R16 Pirelli Scorpion At's at 16 front and 20 rear, tackled all the dunes with gusto with CDL engaged and TC & ABS disengaged. I was starting in 4th Low then 3rd Low halfway up. I have found engaged CDL and disengaged TC & ABS works best in sand. It was just my son and I in the car with fridge and a small amount of camping gear so not a huge amount of weight. I had to have a second go at a couple of dunes as they were soft and carved up. Bucketloads of fun though.

    Cheers

It's the only thing we could come with.... We also tried different approach speeds etc.... BTW... BOTH are also AUTO's.

I found that going up in High with the shift in 3rd did the best job. But low 3rd with the 'manual' switched on was good also.

I think there has been an enormous amount of bad press about TC. Fact is, if you back off, you lose. Give it more and it will climb......and climb...and CLIMB

    Cdl

My dad and a friend did the Canning Stock Route back when it was still an achievment but after the camels had left, about 1988 from memory.

Anyway they did it in turbo diesel 60 series with no expense spared....thats right including diff locks.

Over 600 sand dunes fully loaded is a pretty good testing ground but it didn't take long before the descovered they were more succesfull without the lockers engaged.

As some one touched on earlier, the tyres were just digging themselves holes. Once they worked this out, they left them off and didn't use them again all trip.

Granted a CDL works a little different and many different circumstances llike tyres and suspension will change the effect but I would bet this is the same issue.

To much traction stealing precious momentum.

It's all about grip, and how you use it.
Grip doesnt mean much when you lose momentum
Ive been out with others with front and rear diff locks and they get no further
if you need to climb an obstacle you wont be going quickly anyway
When your in a group situation the first couple of cars make it up fairly easy after that depending on terrain it becomes harder until eventually out come straps and winch cables
