I think peoples beliefs and values change dramatically when they become 'victims' of a serious crime - some don't but a lot do. The frustration also builds when, as seen recently, the DPP in NSW bargain with defence solicitors (without consultation with the victims and family) that a lesser charge be accepted with a guilty plea. It guarantees a successful prosecution and reduced court costs but often disregards the communities expectations of justice for the crime committed.

Death penalty - yeah civil rights etc... but paying for some turd to bludge around and be waited on hand and foot for the rest of his life - or sentence term - i think we could spend money on better things.

Most crims get into the petty crime cycle from a young age because they've got NOTHING and NOTHING to look forward to in life...drugs add another dimension to their existance.

I think more appropriate sentences would dissolve the arguement for death penalties - people would then think justice is being done.

    I tell ya something
If someone belted my mum about and she was in hospital
Id Kill the bastard myself I dont giv a stuff what anyone else thinks thats justice and thats my opinion
everyone else has theres and the arguement will never end but sustaining a Murderer, Rapist,Paedophile in jail is a waste of tax payers money
Some of these mongrels get out and do it again so wheres the bloody sense in reinstating these wasted vesels of human form back into society
Most of us never enter the thought of taking another life or destroying one for the rest of theres
But there are people out there that do and some even take pleasure in doing so so wheres the justice for those that have family members taken from them
Wheres the relent in there pain
Where does the ongoing torment for the victims of rape end
How do you take away their pain ?

Bingo. These bastards don't belong with us. And what is worse - they get the right for free education whilst locked up. I have never been able to understand why my taxes are spent on keeping these pric*s alive when we need to spend the money supporting those who need it or deserve it.

yep and allowing a paraphrase/quote of one of the guys from the blue collar comedy tour...

"In texas if more than 3 people see you do what you did you go straight to death row... everywhere else is abolishing the death scentance in texas we're puttin in an express lane"

Now if only we could get that down here bugger DNA evidence in the event of at least 3 reliable witnesses giving the same set of evidence you hang...

or more in my line of thinking

you get to die or suffer till death in the same way as you made your victim suffer.

    Make Life mean Life

I don't think the death penalty is appropriate... Just let us get the sentencing right. Let life imprisonment mean just that, Life behind bars.

Pedophiles: Life behind bars and castration
Rapists: Life behind bars and castration
    Murderers: Life behind bars
Armed Robbery and Assault :20 years no parole
    Common Assault: 5 years

You get the picture.... We don't need to lower ourselves to their level just create a federal prison in the middle of nowhere in central Australia and put all the lowlife doin' life behind bars in it.... They don't need a place with a view anyway cause they will never ever get out.

Yes it does doesn't it MrsMc. I can't imagine how gutted those left behind must feel

Police can have all the powers in the world but if they can't be effectively used and supported by the Courts, then it's pointless.

Mandatory sentencing is a tricky one but it does solve certain problems...

Yes , Its sad when they would rather settle for somthing less to ensure they secure a "convitction". Lesser sentencing for some crimes doesnt help anyone & in alot of respects Its lessens the crime itself. This Generation of Law certainly doesnt set an example for future generations who will not be detered by these cop -outs.

is society changing though? I feel I am fairly young at 30, and it seems to me like everyone younger than me to a large degree is going of the rails and doing dumb stuff, whereas all the oldies say it wasn't like that in their day and things are worse?

    is it a generational thing?

I go to work with guys who don't think dope is a drug, and think its fine to drive/work/do stuff while high. I think they are mad and they argue with me till we literally fight about it thats its no big deal. I have asked for random drug testing it bothers me that much. This seems to be one of the mindset of the currently emerging generation, or is this just an ongoing thing?

I don't have an issue with the death penalty for true criminals, proven beyond a doubt. Just hang em, can use the same rope over and over, no point spending my tax bucks on pills or electricity or bullets. The minority groups would probably say you have to use felt lined rope to not cause rope burn and have to disinfect it after use to not pass on bugs to the next victim!
