Gas is set to double in price 2008 (?) due to govt exice charges kicking in, also gas is harder to get away from major cities & when you can almost same price as ULP. to me gas is not an option.

I'm not exactly an authority in Landy's I just really like my RRC

Maybe PM "Bradtot" I know his rangie is on LPG he might be able to give you figures?
As for towing I belive that no other 4x4, (excluding big trucks) have as high a towing capacity as the landys. In the UK it's even higher, not sure why it's lower here?
In my opinion the 3.5L V8 is a good solid reliable motor but if you have a big van maybe look for a bigger petrol motor 3.9+ I;m sure someone here is a caravan owner they will tell you how they tow. I guess the disco will have a slightly better power to weight ratio as it looks a bit smaller so I assume it's lighter?
The only experience I have had towing was towing a toyota really though I towed a RR on a car trailer with my RR and it pulled it no problem but I was to ahem, aprehensive to go fast with a couple of tons behind me on a trailer. I didnt go up any steep hills either. Seemed OK though. As for fuel the petrol will cost you a bit, (All V8's will) but if it's a weekender like mine I just live with it. If you get a used one look for one already on gas and save abit of $$$$$

    Hi Tim,

If you're looking at touring, I'd definately go the diesel. I myself have a 3.9L V8 and the range out of a 60L tank is not so great. They do however have a lot of grunt (overtaking on highways is not a problem), plenty of power for towing, but they are thirsty. Mine's in a Defender 90 (short wheel base), so a little bit over 2 tonne (from memory) and the consumplion varies from about 15-16 L /100 km in the city, (shifting at approx 2000RPM) to about 22-24L / 100 km when I really throttle it (Sitting on just under 120km/h).

I generally fill up every 250km and put in between 42 to 48L of petrol. So I average about 17 to 19 L /100km... mind you I use premium unleaded.

Diesel, from what I understand is between 10 and 13L / 100 km, so nearly double the range between refills.

For $5 to $10k I think you would have your pick of V8 Disco1's and there would be quite a few Tdi's in that price range too. Private sales of course. Dealers ask stupid prices.
I doubt very much you would get a Defender in that price range though.

For $5k to $10k you would only get a fairly old Patrol or Cruiser in diesel form. Think MQ Patrol or 60 Series Cruiser.

    Q. Will the price of LPG increase in the future?

    A. LPG is currently excise free but it will become subject to excise in the future. No excise will be applied to LPG until 1 July 2011. The full rate of excise to apply to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) used in vehicles will be 12.5 cents per litre. This rate will apply from 1 July 2015. The planned excise rates for LPG are as follows:

    1 July 2011 2.5 cpl
    1 July 2012 5.0 cpl
    1 July 2013 7.5 cpl
    1 July 2014 10.0 cpl
    1 July 2015 12.5 cpl

For mine I'd suggest a Range Rover classic - amazing value for money and amazingly capable 4WD even against today's vehicles.

Yes the V8 is thirsty but if you can spare the load space LPG is cheap and diesel has a price premium over ULP (in Perth metro anyway).

Good looking, comfortable, reliable, capable and cheap. Shame the cargo space isn't bigger.

    My 2c.
