My preference (for what it's worth) would be for a diesel simply because the of xtra range, which will be particularly handy up north. You should be able to score a Tdi disco for that money, maybe a well used Tdi defender. This particular diesel engine (Tdi) is far more efficient that the nissan or tojo donks from the equivalent era. Also in your budget will be the GQ patrol which are noted for their reliability and could be cheaper to own, however your bum will thank you many times over if you buy a disco instead of a GQ! Be warned thou - people who buy landrovers tend to keep on buying them for the rest of their life! And the only way to find out why is to experience it yourself!

I just wish they'd post their local. at any time someone in brissy wants to ask that question I feel like dumping them into the passangers seat of big red whipping up the ipswich motorway (with a trailer on) then running them over the 4x4 test track on base then back to work, without ever having gotten out of the vehicle to engage freewheeling hubs, change tyre pressure or anything else and on the way out pointing to the military rovers and pointing out that the primary important diferences between those ones and mine are

1. mines a burgandy 5 door they are Mat Auscam 2 doors
2. those ones are older
3. I have a stereo and aircon
4. my 75l tank gets me nearly 700km if Im running light and not much less loaded

then on the way back to dropping them off showing them "that" clip by the hampster and before driving off looking them square in the eye and asking "questions?"

It's not a wind up it's just that i have never owned a 4x4 before. I'm looking at a budget and need some info from people who have or own 4x4. I have looked at the other makes but one the nissan and toyota's a bit big for storage at my place and a friends father inlaw bought a land drover for under 10k so itr sort of fits my spendings. Plus the friend of mine does a bit of 4wd so i thought i would do a bit more research into the landys. What year and model would i be looking at for this pricfe and what should i look for. I am thinking more the diesel models due to the fact that i think they wear better compared to the unleaded V8's as i'm probably gonna end up with buying a car with high km's correct me if i'm wrong though.

To give you a bit of an estimated price range u may be looking at. I purchased a 94 V8 disco (post facelift) a few months back for 5k. When I was looking around there were a few disiels in the 6-7k price range so I'm sure you can get a tdi Disco very easily in that price range and a little bit left over for mods if you wanted to take that path. I went the V8 as the particular car was definately the best condition one for sale at the time.

Did you pick that up privately or from a car yard. I'm still trying to decide though on a diesel or unleaded. I would really love to have the grunt of a V8 though. The only thing that worries me is the fuel costs.

As I said in the PM it is heavy on the fuel. But most 4wds on petrol will be the same. If that worries you, going a petrol patrol or etc wont save your fuel bill.

I think i'm sold more towards a landy as it falls more in my price bracket for the amount of times i'm gonna use it. Any one out there running there V8's on gas? How do they go is it worth looking at doing that? I think i have to do a bit more saving now and then choose a model.
